Dean's World

Defending the liberal tradition in history, science, and philosophy.

Perspective

A capital city under siege as sectarian religious violence erupts. 177 vehicles burned overnight. “No-go” zones for police and military. Schools, businesses and a mall looted and on fire. Armed men overrunning a police station. Authorities warning the violence could get worse before it gets better. Ominous intimations the country may be sliding into civil war.

Iraq? No, France.

Some group in Paris said they would maintain a cease fire until January 2005. Isn't that about when the violence started escalating?

So we've got the utterly incompetent french weasels government on one side, and the totally irrational muslim fanatics on the other. Is it wrong to want them both to lose?

I only feel sorry for the innocent french civilians caught in the middle (not that I expect them to learn anything from it, that would be so gauche).

There is a post over at Roger L. Simon's that suggests the riots may be more like L.A/Cincinati than Fallujah/Mosul.

Just another perspective. It may be very easy to blame Muslims/Islamist/Un-assimilated Immigrants, but it behooves us to remember that these riots may have alternate/additional roots.

From a law &order perspective, who really cares why they're rioting? Shut up already &shut 'em down, then dig through the excuses. 7-8 days of rioting are more than enough. If it happened here, I'd want the police chief's head on a pike by now.

What gets me is how these politicians in France are saying that criticising these thugs is 'fanning the flames'. Riiiight - they're saying 'if we lie to the public, they'll go back to sleep'. Such caring, understanding, tolerant people...

Oh, I totally agree with Roger's take. I just thought the contrast was amusing.

Is it too early to call Paris' "the most dangerous suburbs in the world," a la the airport road (which according to reports is now safe)?

In "Clash of Civilizations" Huntington identifies the pervasive acceptance of multi-culturalism as the most imminent threat to the survival of Western Civilization.

When cultural relativism takes over, it is arrogant to suggest that immigrants ought to assimilate, ethno-centric to suggest that OUR values (individualism, rule of law, consensual government, etc) are worth defending and even dying for. If one can't convince himself that his culture is worth a sh*t, he won't be able to convince outsiders. One ends up admiring all other cultures and despising his own. It seems that Europe has been heading down this road for some time, and the US was not too far behind. Recall in the 90s when History took a vacation that Diversity was the buzzword, the proof of enlightenment for the chattering classes of the intelligentsia.

In the ultimate irony, it may turn out that bin-Laden woke us from our vacation from History, just in time to save ourselves. Had he waited, perhaps we would have torn ourselves apart from the inside out as France seems to be doing. But now multi-culturalism is falling out of favor, and many Americans that previously took democracy for granted (myself included) are coming to realize, just in time, that Western Civilization must be defended.

Meh. The U.S. underwent years of rioting this bad and worse in some of its major cities--over 30 years ago.

It ain't poor kicked-around "multi-culturalism" that causes these things, although certainly the moral relativism it sometimes encourages probably aggravates the problem. Europe and America have always, and I do mean always, been "multi-cultural," and it is a conservative delusion to claim otherwise.

Riots like this are what happens whenever you have a combination of a strong welfare state that encourages unemployment, lack of education, ethnic tensions, and teaching people that they should resent rather than emulate those who have more than they do, and so on.

When we had the Watts rights was it because of muslims, or "multi-culturalism?" When L.A. was in flames because the Lakers won the NBA Championship, was it the multi-cultis who did it?

All that said, I admit to having more than a little schadenfreude at how our so-called cultural and intellectual betters are now living through what we lived with in the United States back when we had a system that worked a lot more like theirs does.

So France is going through its own version of what America did in the 1970s. Cry me a river.

I think this may go deeper than the US issue, because of demographics and a lack of assimilation.

France's population has stayed at about 60M while the number of Muslims has grown from 1M to 6M. I do not believe they have been substantially assimilated, despite the alleged French rejection of multi-culti (the veil issue, etc). Based on the demographics, they appear to be France's future, and instead of becoming part of French culture, their youth seem to be establishing a sort of French Palestine.

The solution, of course, is to teach them the values of liberal democracy, and cut off the vicious, fascistic Saudi/Iranian propaganda that is brainwashing too many of their youth.

There is no evidence that Islam has anything to do with this or any other violence in the world. It's all a complete coincidence that it's the Muslims this one time.

...their youth seem to be establishing a sort of French Palestine.

That's what I was trying to get at. Europe does not seem to have the self-confidence in its own civilization to insist that immigrants assimilate and adopt Western Values of indviduality and tolerance.

They (Europe) turn a blind eye to anti-semitism, even to the point of suppressing a government funded study on it, they turn a blind eye to honor killings and rapes. That is cultural relativism out of control. It's no wonder this demographic time bomb is exploding.

Actually, France has had these riots on and off for a long time. Anyone seen the musical Les Miserables? And, IIRC, there were major riots in France in the 1960s that somewhat presaged the U.S. rioting.

In 1795 there were major riots in Paris. They were ended when Napoleon ordered his artillery batteries to fire at the rioters. That saved the revolutionary government. This event comes down to us through history as "a whiff of grape-shot".

10 years later, Napoleon became Emperor of France.

I'm finding myself wondering if history may repeat itself. What is Sarkozy going to do? Will he respond at some point by giving his police (and, eventually, supporting military units) "shoot to kill" orders?

If he does, will that eventually lead to him becoming President of France, a job he's made no secret of wanting?

These riots might have been caused by local problem, but Viking Observer sees a connection between what he calls the "moslem-led riots" in Paris and Denmark.

A few weeks ago, one commenter at another Danish site, AbduRahman said:

Soon people in Danmark will feal curse of Allah, holly brigades had in Bosnia&Hercegovina too!!!

“FIGHT AGNEST THEM ,ALLAH WILL PANISH THEM WITH YOUR HANDS!!!”

In closing I want to say that DO NOT HELP OR GET INVOLVED WITH THE UNITED STATES army OR ISRAEL army OR any other against-islamic countrys to help them destory us. And for example if a contry such as sweden or finland joins the USA or Israel to help them….. well…. innocents will be killed in theyr countrys like the innocent civillians are been killed in our countrys! Its time for us to be equal!
Mujaheedin/Resistance is not terrorists, they are to liberate the country…

Obviously, they think they're in a postition to make this kind of threat.

According to Viking Observer:

Rosenhøj Mall has several nights in a row been the scene of the worst riots in Århus for years. "This area belongs to us", the youths proclaim. Sunday evening saw a new arson attack.

Their words sound like a clear declaration of war on the Danish society. Police must stay out. The area belongs to immigrants.

According to No Pasaran, the French government has said that the riots were "not spontaneous" but rather "well organized."

It's just too much of a coincidence that there were similar "spontaneous" riots involving Muslims in Denmark and Britain at the same time. It's also too much of a coicidence that the 'spontaneous riots' in Denmark were planned three weeks ahead, with signs announcing the coming jihad.

I think the miserable conditions in the French suburbs explain why the French riot was more successful that similar attempts in Denmark and Britain. But, three similar riots, following the same basic pattern, taking place during the same time during the holidays - and we're not supposed to think they're connected?

One last bit of proof. The Guardian blames the French govt. for everything.
