Another Reason to Root for the Sox

Read the story of Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez and Jose Contreras.

With any luck, Castro will choke to death on his next cigar if they win.

(Thanks Casey.)

During the Game 1 broadcast, Joe Buck mentioned that Castro does not allow Contreras' name to be spoken and that a few of his relatives were traveling on horseback to some shack in a remote part of Cuba to listen to the broadcast. It made me wonder how many people unfortunate enough to be riding a horse Saturday night in Cuba turned up dead or not at all.

On a lighter note, it is hard to believe this is actually happening in Chicago. I just assumed I would never see a World Series in this city in my lifetime, and I am not even 30 yet.

Go Sox!

Come on. El Duque and Contreras are reasons to like the White Sox ? Because they managed to salvage two pitchers from the Yankees scrapheap ? El Duque already pitched in 4 World Series for the Yankees.

Four reasons to root for "da Sox"

1) They have one of my all-time favorite Yanquis, El Duque
2) They represent a for-real working-class town, not a festering Texas oil-money shithole
3) If they win, it will liberate the hungry ghosts of Joe Jackson, Ed Cicotte, and Buck Weaver from the baseball bardo
4) If they win, it will be a stake in the heart of GWB

Go Sox!

(And as a connoisseur of irony, I secretly relish seeing Yankees fans, most of whom are too young to remember the Brooklyn
Dodgers, saying, "Wait 'til next year!")
