Houston vs. St. Louis

I'm not sure who to root for, Houston or St. Louis. My midwestern pride says I'd love to see an I-55 series, Chicago-St. Louis, and to have these two old teams take each other on. Both teams have a very old heritage; the Cardinals were formed in 1882, and the White Sox were formed in 1893. Gotta love that history. `The Astros have only existed since 1962. Whippersnappers!

Then again, as a proud citizen of the Republic of Texas (you never really leave Texas) part of me wants want to root for the Astros. And the Astros have never been to the World Series.

Too bad whoever it is will have to be crushed like a bug by the mighty White Sox. Life is so unfair sometimes. :-)

But speaking of Baseball, here's an interesting trivia question: Washington DC is now home of the new Washington Nationals. Previously, DC was home to not one but two teams that were known as the Washington Senators. One moved to a new city and changed its name. Then a new expansion team came in to DC and took that old team's name. Then those Senators also left DC, and changed to still another name.

Both former Washington Senators teams are still active in the major leagues. For 5 points apiece, name those teams.

As usual, no googling. Honor binds all participants.

I'm rooting for Houston, because I think they'd be easier to beat.

I think it is the Twins and the Rangers. I know one is the Rangers.

Mmm hmm. Houston easier to beat. Well, if the Chisox can get anyone to 1st base against them, maybe - they won't score much. Clemens, Pettite, and Oswalt are a bit of a trick to hit, though.

The original Senators moved to Minnesota in 1961 to become the Twins. The next incarnation lasted from 1961 to 1971 before moving to Texas to become the Rangers. Judging by the success of each of those teams I think the Expos were wise to come up with a new name.

As a Texican originally from Houston who's been living in St. Louis for over twenty years you'd think I'd be struggling with whom to root for, oddly enough that is not the case. The St. Louis Cardinals are a great team, but what really differentiates the Cardinals from the Astros, and most teams in Baseball, are the fans. Cards fans are among the truest and most loyal on earth, and no matter how good a game the Astro's can give the Sox, it just wouldn't be as good a series as the Cards v the Sox, no doubt about it the Cards are going to the series.

I'm rooting for Houston. Mainly because their manager, Phil Garner, was run out of town here in Detroit as some sort of washed up has been. So it'd be cool for the Astros to win the Series, just so whiney ass Tiger fans can whine some more. I'd love for some clueless Tiger's fan to say "Why can't we get a coach like that??" .. HAHAHA

As for your trivia question, my first thought was Baltimore. Since someone else said the Twins, I'll go with Baltimore &Minnesota.

Go 'Stros. Say what you want about the Cards. They had their chance last year and blew it. I'm predicting a lot of 1-2 games, considering the level of pitching that will be on display, even from the AL team.

I attended the final game of both versions of the Senators. Both games were at RF Kennedy Stadium.

After the first version was sold off, I went completely sour on the Senators. But it appears they've made a home playing hockey in Canada or somewhere... which is just as well, 'cuz they were great hockey players when they had baseball uniforms.
