Dean's World

Defending the liberal tradition in history, science, and philosophy.

Race, Class, And Hurricane Katrina

As you may know, about two-thirds of New Orleans’ population is black. We now have liberal blogs and commentators around the world arguing that there was a conspiracy by New Orleans officials (and they toss in the Bush administration for good measure) to kill off the city's black population. I just had to address these crazy claims (and provide aid links courtesy of Instapundit blog), and state: "A key question that these liberal critics should ask: Where are their Hollywood and other entertainment friends, while various Christian and other religious groups are already out in force with relief efforts? Why aren't their beloved European allies helping out, as America helps out folks when disaster strikes? Using their own logic, it must be because (at least in New Orleans and parts of Mississippi) it mostly affected black folks. By the way, BlackAmericaWeb.com reported yesterday that the National Urban League and the NAACP are assessing how they can help."

I don't think there was a conspiracy; I think it was just poor planning. The fact remains that if you didn't own a car, you were most likely unable to get out of New Orleans; and New Orleans was one of the cities in which people were most likely not to own cars. No malice involved; simply a terrible oversight.

O mah Gawd.

It was a conspiracy to eliminate Rednecks, I tells you! Speaking of which:

Right now there is a steady stream of rednecks, cajuns, coona$$es, Yats, stumpjumpers, and hillbillies going offshore to get the oil and gas flowing again. For the next couple of weeks they will be working twelve hour shifts in the tropical sun and 100 degree heat to make it possible for you all to drive your cars and heat your homes. Working around damaged structure is real dangerous because you never know when something will let loose. Yeah, the kind of people we laugh at in Walmart. Let's remember this moment when we begin to feel superior to that guy in the overalls with the missing teeth.

What a crock of crap. It's all about the "Man" isn't it???

BTW, I was asking about the Hollywood thing yesterday, and I'm collecting links, so if anyone knows of ANYONE from Hollyweird who is doing ANYTHING email me.

Not sure if it counts as Hollywood, but apparently Stephen King owns a radio station in Maine, and having a pay for play (call in with a donation and they'll play your donation) and matching all donations to the Red Cross. IIRC King is a Liberal, but apparently does have a soul. Odd, considering his writing, no?

H/T Michelle Malkin....

Maybe not so weird. By getting all his nasty impulses out in his writing, he can free himself to be a cheerful (and charitable) guy.

Why no links to these "liberal blogs and commentators"?

In the comments section at Shay's blog he finally gets around to semi-identifying one of the alleged loons, but again no link. Apparently Shay was referring to this Daily Kos diary entry by Flip Floss.

It's pretty inflammatory, but it boils down to: "the government failed to do everything it could to evacuate people because it doesn't really care about poor black folks," not "the government is part of a conspiracy designed to kill off the city's black population".

Shay's overstatement is nearly as absurd as Flip Floss' post, and Shay's failure to back up his broad accusation with even a single link is pathetic.

No links because I don't give free publicity to crazy folks. Say what you will, but various blogs and other stuff I've read have a conspiratorial tone to them (including the one that you mentioned)

By the way, I am a she and not a he.

Accusations made without evidence are empty. If you don't want to "give free publicity to crazy folks" by linking, you can still quote the offender so readers can judge who's right.

The only blog you belatedly cited turned out to say something quite different and less offensive than what you alleged. So, your empty accusation turned out to be false.

There are countless legitimate reasons to bash Kos and his unhinged horde of diarists. Why bother making stuff up?

And sorry about the he/she mistake.
