It was 2.759 this morning, but the news reports it will be difficult to find under 3.00 by tomorrow. Predicing it to break $4.00 within 10 days in New England.
Here in central Ontario, Canada, prices are just over $1 (per litre) in the first time -- as far as I know -- ever. None of the gas station signs in my town are even equipped for that extra digit, so most are just blank, or say "02.9" meaning "102.9". One sign has "2.9" with a big plastic number "10" pasted beside the "2".
The gas station across the street from my house in Chicago (when I'm in Chicago) was above $3.00 for all three grades of gas (excluding diesel) when I left. In places near downtown it's as high as $3.20
Our truck has a 27 gallon tank, and takes roughly 80 liters per fill-up. That works out to about $1.67 per gallon. But I don't think you were asking me. ;)
In Brockton, MA we paid $2.59 yesterday, playing arbitrage because the place on the other corner was at $2.69. They are never more than 5 cents apart, normally.
Today they were $2.71 and $2.84 respectively. Highest we saw for regular at any of the several places we drove by in our travels this past day was $2.89. Lowest price I can remember seeing in the past two days was $2.55.
Here's an interesting thing: the folks who spend the most time demanding that we adopt alternative fuels and stop being so dependent upon middle eastern oil will be the first ones demanding that the government do something to lower the price of gas. Funny how that works, huh?
Filled up yesterday for $2.69/3.8 liters in Milwaukee, ahead of schedule. Other stations, even other stations of the same chain, were already showing $2.99. Wisconsin has a state law mandating a minimum markup at the station, to prevent price wars. If the current proposal to repeal it passes, prices will drop about eight cents.
I don't advocate the government do diddly for the price of gas. Nor do I support the ludicrious idea of opening up the SPR with possible damage to the main processing centers. Bad ideas on both sides.
I'd rather the government stop the 'gouging' protection. Maybe when we paid $60 to fill a 25 gallon tank, Americans in general will start considering, seriously, the use of alternate or dual-fuel vehicles.
(San Angelo, TX) On base this morning $2.53...Walmart is about a penny cheaper with the discount card....Next month in Honolulu...It's still under 2.90...
Yesterday evening at 6pm, $2.59 with a few stations still charging $2.49. 9pm last night, though -- $2.89 at the previously 2.59 stations. The Mobil with $2.49 obviously hadn't gotten the word yet.
Payed $2.769 a gallon for premium last night, but I'm betting it's only going to go up. I'm in North Alabama, so due to geography and shipping logistics we'll probably feel the hurt from Katrina knocking out all the refineries at least as bad, if not worse, than most places. Which is why I filled up last night even though I still had half a tank.
BTW: That $2.769 is already up ten cents from the weekend.
Just jumped up to 2.83 on base here in west texas. Good thing I just bought a more fuel efficient vehicle. I don't even notice the change in expense....so to hell with all you Yukon Denali owners and giant SUV drivers....nah nah nah nah!!
San Antonio, Texas. Night before last I filled up paying $2.49 and was concerned about this happening. Yesterday it went to $2.59 and around 1:00 P.M. today it was, $2.65.
WGN in Chicago reported, $3.69 at noon today.
A little hint my Dad taught me was always filling up at a half tank of gas. He never wanted me to tun out and said the car runs more fuel effecient with more gas. When I pumped my 1/2 tank of gas, I also got a bottle of fuel additive. I would suggest the brand, *Lucas*, if you can get it. FWIW...;-).
Oops, run out of gas. I did one time and that is why my Dad had me do that. My cars have run more smoothly since I started that 1/2 tank bit. I don't know, it could be all in my head that cars run better with more fuel.
Rianna: We're already paying over $60 for a 25 gallon tank. That'd be $2.40 (or "$2.399") per gallon.
In real terms, this is still less than we were paying in 1979, IIRC; and that's not including cost as a percentage of income.
Things will have to get much worse for much longer before everyone will buy a Prius. (And while I've long been a proponent of diesels, given that regular and biodiesel both cost considerable more than unleaded, at least around here, that's not much of an incentive at the moment.)
The market will take care of such things in the long run, yes. People are quite good at making cost/benefit decisions of this nature.
(I knew there was a reason not to buy a 450SL... and that reason is "premium, 12 mpg".)
San Jose, Calif area. I paid 2.99 today for regular unleaded today, although there were some cheaper stations around. On the way to work I noticed that some stations that are usually more expensive, were cheaper, like $2.88. I suspect their prices will be going up soon. Previous tank at the same station had been 2.79.
Update on Friday...tried to fill up the second car today. I went to six (6) stations before I found gas. Yes, six stations--two BP, two Exxon, two indies--were empty. The seventh was a Shell, and all they had was the premium. I've bought gas there before, so I know they weren't trying to gouge me.
Hmmm...I wonder if we'll be able to get gas next week when return from vacation!
Oh yes, price was (average) $3.19 for regular, although nobody seemed to have any!
BTW, and OT can you announce the Storyblog? I have a twit the Rand story in it.
And I thought it was horrible!

I paid $2.44 for regular unleaded at 4:30 p.m. on Monday and by 7:30 Tuesday morning it was $2.59. Now today it's $2.75.
(I live in Arkansas.)
Paid only 3.169 per gallon today. Regular unleaded.
Only bought $10.00. It is around 2.99 at other places but I was dead empty.
