Lego Star Wars

Lego Star WarsNow here's a surprisingly fun little video game for PS/2 (or Xbox) I picked up today to play with my son: Lego Star Wars.

Whoever thought this up should get an award. In it, you play a video game that runs through the basic storyline of Star Wars episodes 1 through III. But everything in the game, including the characters you play, are made out of Legos. Which is both clever marketing and much fun: it's like you're playing with animated Lego toys. It's also pretty much "family friendly," because it's hard to take violence seriously when all you're doing is breaking apart Lego toys.

The game play is simple and fun, and lets a second player drop in or drop out at any time. I really like that--I wish more video games these days would allow that in fact.

You don't have to be a Star Wars geek to have fun with this. You just have to enjoy a fun video game.

(Thanks Kevin.)

Dean, my kids' box of Lego Star Wars has been sitting in my office, scant feet from the very spot whence I am typing this, for months! On installation (not before) it tells you that installation requires some kind of poorly-described graphics card involving "pixil shading" that for some reason their fairly current computer doesn't have -- and which we have been utterly unable to install!

I'm trying again tonight. Meanwhile, can my kids play at your house?

Ronald, that's why PC gaming sucks -- big time. Trust me, I went through that for years before I realized that consoles are better in every conceivable way, including graphics.

Yeah, but you know, Chris, just as I have a house without a TV, I like having a house without a gaming console. I just don't want to make gaming that big of a priority, symbolically, around the hearth. Now if your PC can make it go, fine -- same with DVD's (that we select and vet). But no Machines Officially Dedicated to Wasting Time!

I really do appreciate knowing I'm not the only dummmy out there, though!

What do you like, Dean? I'm off the Sam Adams thing, myself.

My home theater system is centered around my gaming console. I use the console for watching DVDs (in surround sound), it's my main stereo system (with all my music contained on the hard drive) and, of course, it's pretty good for playing games, as well. The next generation consoles will replace your TiVo too, I hear.
