Squirelly Goodness

As I've mentioned before, I really liked the new Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. In retrospect, I liked it even better than I thought I did initially. It was great.

Today to my delight I learned that all the scenes with squirrels used live trained squirrels, not CGI or puppets.

Man, now I really like this movie. I need to go see it again.

(Thanks John.)

The more I think about it, the more the oompa loompa schtick ruined it for me. Or maybe it was Danny Elfman's poor handling of the music.

Other than that, it's a pretty good movie. Unfortunately, I think the ruining of the oompa loompa songs will keep me from watching it again.

Well, that and Johnny Depp.

I liked the Oompa Loompa songs except for one thing. Is it too much to ask for them to mix the song so you can actually hear the lyrics?

Liked the movie, but boy I woulda liked it more if I could hear what they were singing.

I liked this movie a lot, too.

I had assumed the squirrels were CGI. That's some impressive training.

What the hell are all of you talking about?

Willie Wonka is a movie about a very sick sadistic bastard, and all the very sick twisted children and adults who supposedly represent both Americana and Mr. Wonka's victims. The poor kid who is a good kid is not vindicated in the end. Instead, he is the recipient of absolute whimsey that could just as easily have gone the other way.

Admittedly I have not seen the new version. But I have seen the previews ad nauseum. The techincal training glories of "squirrel action" technique could not possibly ameliorate the horror exemplifed by the earlier movie. And if anyone could top the sicknes exhibited by Gene Wilder in the earlier movie, Johnny Depp would be a top contender.

Pay to watch this movie? You would have to pay me to watch this movie.

Your wet blanket,
John

Generally speaking I don't respect the opinions of people who criticize a book or movie without bothering to see it. I make exceptions for extreme situations--things that are universally condemned by reasonable people, like the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion or Fahrenheit 9/11--but otherwise, people who do this are just being silly.

By the way: Raold Dahl's original book was great. I loved it. This movie was so close to it that it was a real treat to watch. Also, Charlie is vindicated in the end.
