"Frankenmeds?"

I have always viewed with some bemusement those who are afraid of so-called "Frankenfoods," i.e. genetically modified foods. Unless there's evidence that there are poisons in them--which can be verified pretty easily via chemical analysis--there's just no reason to worry about eating them.

Now I note something interesting: microbiologists have produced human antibodies against anthrax in tobacco plants. The method can be used to quickly generate anthrax vaccine if there is ever a widespread outbreak of anthrax due to terrorist attack or some other calamity.

I find myself wondering: would those who are afraid of "Frankenfoods" also be afraid of this sort of "Frankenmedicine?"

I knew tobacco prevented anthrax. That's why I still smoke.
My story and sticking with IT!

I guess I'm wearing "Frankenclothes" because they are artificially made. In a state of nature, we would all go naked. In a state of nature, we would all freeze to death in this climate. Perhaps we should never have left equatorial Africa. Rousseau. Hmmm....

Short answer: yes.

Longer answer: my prediction is not all of them, but a pretty vocal minority of them. This vocal minority includes various factions: anti-technology/anti-science zealots who unquestioningly see all "natural" as good and all "artificial" as bad; closet eugenicists who really don't want to see weaker people saved; and ultra-extremists like the human extinction crowd you've pointed out in the past. All of these folks are experts at raising alarmist cries that then scare people into overreacting to such advances.

There are already plenty of frankenmeds. Insulin, for example, is now produced by gene-spliced bacteria.

Got no problem with Frankenfoods or meds...but I did note in the produce section that all the watermelons are the same size and shape...this kinda creeped me out...

You should see the square melons they have in Japan.

Would they? Sure. I've known some who won't take an aspirin because, while indistinguishable from the natural product, it is not "natural."
