Dean Esmay:
If you're willing to give credence to the notion that members of the US military, under secret orders from the Bush administration, routinely practice gross human rights abuses, torture and murder and mutilation of prisoners, and don't even report these illegal orders to anyone and simply secretly follow them, you're doing far more than "criticizing the Bush administration." You're exhibiting a horrifying attitude about your own people, your own system of government, and definitely toward the military.

Ditto if you can't just acknowledge that in any group of hundreds of thousands of people (i.e. the members of the military who've rotated in and out of Afghanistan and Iraq the last three or so years) there will be some who act in a criminal manner among them. And if you see that as "making excuses," you've got issues that go way beyond simple criticism of the current conflict or its handling.

Correct Dean. CID exists, as does AFOSI and the other sister branch's folks, to weed the undesireables out, and the strongly punish those who commit such crimes. (I will make exception for those 'crimes' commited during actual war (IE, 'too many' shots used to kill the enemy, the guy thought by the Marine to be 'faking dead', etc.) while I will NOT excuse those gross violations (the Marine that got off after emptying 2 clips into dead terrorists as a 'warning' to others, Abu Ghraib and it's poorly supervised troops (they were NOT ignorant of the UCMJ or the GC!) etc.) that occur within the smallest of percentage points in the military.)

The thing that keeps escaping all the 'ALL WAR CRIMINALS, BABY KILLERS, and RAPISTS' folks that describe the military is that ALL those stories were REPORTED before the MSM made a big stink about it. The Stars and Stripes carried news of several investigations for months before they 'broke' in the MSM. I will not sit quietly by as my husband, and our friends and relatives are slandered in such a gross and unfounded manner. F*CK the ones making the slanderous statements, and their 'free speech is being crushed' crap. Free Speech does NOT protect lies, slander and charecter assasination.

If they don't get it they're dumber than they act...

Timothy Snyder:
I haven't observed media bias against the military or Soldiers doing their job living by the Army Values. My experience is the the media treats Soldiers with more reverence and respect than do many generals and high ranking officials at the pentagon. My batallion commander recently cut funding for tactical operations' training in lieu of redecorating the unit (area beautification) due to a visit from a congressman. In the Army we NCOs call that "fuck the mission, clean the position." And it has happened more often than it should have during my 15 years of service.
