Teh Winnar!

Man these finale shows are always incredibly lame aren't they? But who cares? It was a great season.

Oh yeah, and good luck Carrie. (I'll still be buying Bo's first album.)

We figure she got the sympathy vote, since everyone knows he'll be the bigger star by default. He mopped the floor with her in the last episode, not to mention before that, so there was no reason for her to win except the sympathy vote, or a much bigger audience for cookie cutter country than I ever would have imagined.

She'll go far if she plays her cards right. He'll go farther without even trying.

Bo rocks, but Carrie is a serious cutie. My daughter is devastated though.

Bo is average compared to other successful singers his age in his genre. How good were Dickey Betts, Greg Allman, Donnie Van Zant, and other southern rock singers? They were miles beyond Bo Bice. There isn't even a comparison. He does make a good karaoke singer though. Carrie was by far a better vocalist and her success in the industry should prove it.

Sounds like they showed two different editions of American Idol! :>

Bo got screwed. And I knew he would. They made them sing those god-awful original songs. They might as well had Bo wear a dress. Carrie's pop-country voice was much, much better for those songs.

Oh well. I've never bought an American Idol album before, but I may just check Bo's out.

Ronnie Van Zandt was a mediocre singer. His talent was songwriting. Dickey Betts I'm a big fan of, but "great singer" would not be how I'd describe him.

But if you're going to compare someone young and new who's been restricted in format to greats you've liked for 30 years, it means you've already decided not to like the person.

My streak of buying the AI winner's first album ends at three. Bo is the man. Carrie ain't the gurl.

I like the fact that AI chose a country artist though. Nice to see that diversity. They've had a bubble-gum pop artist (Kelly), two soul artists (Ruben and Fantasia), and now a country girl, with second place this year going to a southern blues/rock guy.

It's a tribute to the show format that they're showing this much diversity (and still more proof that the show's detractors are basically snotty elitists who don't know what they're talking about).

I think a lot us old farts gave Bo the benefit based on a dated concept of the popular music industry. It’s just not the same these days. Rock IS dead, at least as a big seller of recorded music.

And as far as tonight’s show being a bit cheesy, well, yes it was. But it was also the most entertaining 2 hours I have spent in front of the tube in years. I loved every minute of it!

Disclaimer: I've never watched a single episode of AI. I'm not knocking those who like it. I do keep up with it somewhat on the periphery, like here, although I rarely read the comments. If this has been covered, please forgive.

The main problem I have with shows like this is that they are not conducive to my favorite kind of music: Rock--including almost all of its various subsegments. I don't know exactly what (kind of) songs Bo sang, and I can only imagine what the girl sang. However, if he did southern rock (apparently so from the above comments), or any other kind of rock for that matter, IMO it is the band or group as a whole and not necessarily just the singer that makes the music wonderful. Think Lynard Skynard, Queen, Pink Floyd, etc.

I'd like to see an AI that didn't focus on the singing, but then maybe there couldn't be an "Idol" if it were done that way. Maybe it's that I just enjoy the music itself instead of the performer(s).

There are exceptions to the group vs individual appeal. Can you imagine seeing an AI with people trying out playing the guitar like Joe Satriani or Stevie Ray Vaughn?

Now, that, I think I could watch...

It would be extremely difficult actually. It's not that it would be impossible but VERY challenging.

Jerry Kondraciuk:
Bo didn't get screwed. The bottom line is he was too old. Carrie won on her youth and talent. There was no sympathy involved. In fact, I don't seem to recall Carrie EVER being in the bottom two or three. Bo was. So I feel it was Carrie that had the stronger fan base. It was her competition to lose, but her fan base pulled her through.

Before someone starts with voting irregularities (Hi Rose) you must also remember that more than likely a huge chunk of votes came from kids via TEXT messaging. That by far is the fastest way to vote, send the message and then you are done. Bo's fan base was older, and I'm sorry, but older people ain't too savvy with the text messaging interface. Its easier for us to call a number than figure out how to text message.

Carrie won fair and square. Does it mean she was the best singer? Nope. But as Dean said in a previous entry its all about intensity.. I'm looking forward to Carrie's first album and I'll be there to buy it. Heck, I'll buy Bo's too. So in the end, Cowell's record company is gonna be rolling in the dough.

Another reason it was good that Bo lost is that it'll make it a bit easier to get out of his AI contract so he can tour with his band Sugar Money.

I'd like to pick one nit, Jerry. I'm nearly 50 years old, but I'm pretty sure that, if I were on the AT&T cell network, I could hold my own with the young 'uns. Maybe that comes from the fact that I frequently play Counter-Strike (:Source), Unreal Tournament, and so forth.

As it was, I was a demon with pressing Redial -> Speakerphone (listen for busy signal) -> Off -> Redial -> Speakerphone -> Off (lather, rinse, repeat).

Some friends were in town last night at a hotel -- they live a couple hours from Seattle and they tend to come in the night before they need to fly somewhere and stay the night near the airport. While I was waiting for them in the lobby, someone put the finale on the TV and damned if every single guest in the lobby (except me) didn't go over to watch it and cheer on their favorite. Of course the stupid girl behind the desk came close to spoiling it; she said it was already over and said who'd won, but only one person heard her. One guy had a theory that Bo was actually the stronger performer now, and if he moved quick he could be a star for few years, but that Carrie had more potential for an actual career as a singer. It was a fairly nuanced and sophisticated argument, or maybe it just seemed that way because the guy had a British accent, but he seemed to know a lot about music and show business.

I really had no idea this show was so big or people were so into it -- in my daily life, this blog is pretty much the only exposure I have to it. A couple guys at the office apparently watch it, but their conversations on the day after the show consist of "wasn't it great last night?" "Yeah, Bo (or whoever) kicked ass" and it's over in about 5 seconds.

That about perfectly captures the sound of the announcer in Bugs Bunny cartoons. Whenever I've read that headline over the last few days I've seen the ref holding up the Crusher's hand.
