Dean's World

Defending the liberal tradition in history, science, and philosophy.

Hokey religions and ancient weapons..

This weekend we saw Revenge of the Sith. Of the current trilogy, it was the best, but since I thought episodes I and II were almost entirely unwatchable, that's not much of a compliment.

A short review - Space Cowboys are fun, Space Priests and Politicians are not.

The strangest quote: "Only Sith think in absolutes"

(Speaking of Space Cowboys, I can't wait to see Joss Wedon's Serenity)

Dean and Ace have more detailed thoughts about why Lucas' Anakin trilogy wasn't necessary.

I think "wasn't necessarr" is the perfect review of Annakin's trilogy. In all I liked it, but I liked the Star Wars story and universe better before.

Keep in mind, there is a reason Lucas made Ep 4,5, and 6 first. Even he thought they were the better story. If he thought Annakin's trilogy could stand on its own, he'd have made them first.

Just as Ep 5 and 6 don't really work as stand alone movies in my opinion, but only as a collective work of the whole trilogy, The Prequal Trilogy only really works as a collective of all six movies.

Personally, if you look at them as addendum movies as Dean called them, I think they are really fun.

If Lucas ever changes his mind and makes 7,8, and 9, expect more addendum type movies.

The line is "Only Sith deal in absolutes." Not so ironic that way, I know.

Which is silly because the Jedi seem to do the exact same thing.

First, "Only a Sith deals in absolutes." is a pretty absolute statement in itself.

Second, Palpatine the Sith Master is the one talking about tolerance and moral relativism saying that to know the true Force you must study all sides of it. The Jedi are the ones who make the distinction between good v/s evil.

Since the line comes after Anakin says something like "you're either with me or against me", I saw it as Lucas' attempt to stick a cheesy anti-Bush analogy into the story.

(Bush=Sith lord?)

But even if it wasn't an analogy, it wasn't a great line.

I like all six movies. Not an unwatchable moment in any one in my opinion. But this is coming for a man that thinks movies like Jackass and Dude, Where's My Car are great. Talk amongst yourselves...

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that caught the word "deals" in that quote! :)

Actually, if you recall Obi-Wan was quite the relativist in the first trilogy. Remember: "What I said was true, from a certain point of view..."

I know a lot, and I mean a LOT of people who say this is the best Star Wars ever, but they're going on FX and light saber fights. (One fellow I know has already seen Unleashed; a movie I haven't had a chance to watch, but strongly recommend; he said it was pretty good, except for all those dull dialog scenes {g})

I think it has become a critique concensus that Ian McDiarmid does the best job, and has the best lines. And how in the hell do you get Sam Jackson, Natalie Portman, Ewen McGregor, and Hayden Christensen collectively give boring performances in a single film!?

Ok. Some of the dialog in the opening rescue (where Obi-wan and Anakin are arguing in the elevator) actually resurrected the old trilogy's sense of fun for a minute.

BTW, before you join the crowd and crack on Christensen's acting, try watching some of his other work, such as My Life as a House with Kevin Kline.

Sol: I liked Dude, but I'll very much pass on Jackass. The title speaks for itself.

Masked Menace: you are buying into the Lucas mythology. All this crap about how Lucas learned from Joseph Campbell is just that: crap. Find me a reference where Lucas even talks about Campbell before 1990. G'head.

George Lucas' original screenplay was a fairy tale in space; a lame fairy tale. Actually, it's a (bad) ripoff of Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress. Which reminds me; the only truly gripping battle in any Star Wars movie is the attack on the Death Star in Episode IV. Which was a ripoff of the movie Midway...

Does anyone see a pattern here, yet? :)

I will not go to see in the theatre but I willwatch it when it hits DVD. I am told by people who have seen in (and said it was crap but not as bad as the other two) it said that Yoda (who is animatronic) out acts the entire rest of the cast. This might explain why I tend to prefer animation; no stupid actors to mess things up.

Casey, what the hell does Joseph Campbell's archetypes have to do with anything I said? I never said Ep 4 wasn't just a rip off of your typical mideval fairy tale.

I said Lucas started with 4,5, and 6 because he thought they would sell better. As others have noted, would 1,2, and 3 have faired anywhere near as well if it hadn't been for 20+ years of the OT in our collective conscience? Gee, seems Lucas was right.
