Paula Abdul: I Don't Care

So. A contestant from two years ago claims he had an affair with Paula Abdul. She says he's lying and using doctored tapes.

The problem is that once the final couple of dozen contestants are chosen, the judges on that show have no real control. It's not unusual for them to root for contestants they like. Which would make giving some backstage advice a minor infraction at best. Especially if it was a contestant who washed out anyway.

There have also been allegations that she may have a pill-popping problem. This would mean more to me if it weren't for the fact that she has Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome, which from all I've read is quite searingly painful and difficult to treat. Given her background as a dancer--and someone who hasn't danced in public in many years--I find this quite believable.

So, to make it short and sweet: Personally I don't plan to write anything more about this. I simply don't care about any of it. Nor do I see why anyone else should, whether they enjoy the show or not.

You obviously cared enough to devote a post to the subject. Paula hooked up with the dude BEFORE it was the final 10 or 12 when the judges become cheerleaders. She went so far as to tell him what to wear and what songs to sing to give him the edge to get into the final 12.

Whether people believe his story or not is irrelevant. The damage was done. I can only hope the AI producers do the right thing and boot Paula.

Boot her? What if he's lying? It's he said, she said. She shouldn't lose her job because some loser has sour grapes.

Other AI contestants say he is lying because the only songs he could have song had to be off an approved list. Dude says that she went CD shopping to help him choose songs. If that is true than others would have known about it before now. He's trying to make some money and if he's telling the truth about her helping him, then he is an asshole for trying to ruin her for it.

I too don’t really care. Much. But as someone who was falsely accused of sexual harassment in the past, I can relate just a little.

It looks like the Fox lawyers and publicists have handled this perfectly. They say the guy has refused to cooperate (i.e., make a sworn statement) in their investigation, and he just admitted as much himself today. Paula is not going home.

What if he's lying?

He's certainly a manipulative, partially lying skeeze, but scads of telephone records back up an inappropriate relationship. Also, a recent answering machine message.

Other AI contestants say he is lying because the only songs he could have song had to be off an approved list. Dude says that she went CD shopping to help him choose songs.

What if they were cd shopping for songs on the list? It's not like it's 5 choices long ...

I don't think any of this is a huge deal that I'll lose sleep over, and ABC (scumbags that they also are) overdramatized it like crazy, but she technically established inappropriate contact with a contestant, while she still had direct impact on whether he made it to the final rounds; when only the three judges made the determination.

And other than that, any woman that develops a weird attraction to a 20-something hoodie sideshow Bob lookalike adds a bit of distaste to the show's aura. I think this may be Idol's chance to phase her out and bring in a judge that people feel more comfortable watching.

Than again:

Aiken also threw some cold water on phone records showing lengthy conversations, supposedly between Abdul and Clark: "I didn't see any information that proved that that was her phone number. I didn't see anything at all.

Dean,

Do you have a link about the RSD syndrome explaining the mechanics? The article you linked just said that Ms. Abdul suffered from the syndrome, but didn't explain how that works. Just curious.

As for the "scandal," I find it beneath my notice.

Casey, here's some info:
RSD from WebMD:
Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSDS) is a rare disorder of the sympathetic nervous system that is characterized by chronic, severe pain. The sympathetic nervous system is that part of the autonomic nervous system that regulates involuntary, bodily functions such as increasing heart rate, constricting blood vessels, and increasing blood pressure. Excessive or abnormal responses of portions of the sympathetic nervous system are thought to be responsible for the pain associated with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome.

The symptoms of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome typically begin with burning pain, especially in an arm, finger(s), palm of the hand(s), and/or shoulder(s). In some individuals, RSDS may occur in one or both legs or it may be localized to one knee or hip. Frequently, RSDS may be misdiagnosed as a painful nerve injury. The skin over the affected area(s) may become swollen (edema) and inflamed. Affected skin may be extremely sensitive to touch and to hot or cold temperatures (cutaneous hypersensitivity). The affected limb(s) may perspire excessively and be warm to the touch (vasomotor instability). The exact cause of RSDS is not fully understood, although it may be associated with injury to the nerves, trauma, surgery, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, infection, or radiation therapy.

OUCH!

And Paula has had enough nerve damage (Back injury and botched back surgery) to have sustained pretty heinous nerve damage, which can cause RSD.

Also, as far as the scandal, I could care less. I just hope Mr. Idiot gets enoug publicity for his new album that it was worth it to trash his reputation enough to sell a few records. He looks like an ass, Paula comes out smelling like a rose. Dude should have thought of that first....

I'm often stunned by how often people don't see the links I've already provided. See the link behind "quite searingly painful and difficult to treat," which goes straight to the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Association's home page, which has all the information on the disease that you could ever want.

Dean Esmay:
...and from what I understand, the allegation is that Abdul hooked up with the contestant after the final 24 or so were chosen, when the judges could no longer change the results except by their comments.

Alright, where is the Pajamahadeen when you need them?? Someone has this expose on TiVo and must have analyzed it frame by frame by now. We'll get to the bottom of this sooner or later.

What did Clay expect? Have the reporter call the number on air and verify that it was Paula's?

Something shady is going on and all the Corey Clark thing did was bring it to the forefront. I mean, Is it purely coincidental that Paula was dressing like a slut and gushing all over the guys, only to be more subdued and proper in recent weeks?

Why is that? Is it because the Corey Clark book deal was leaked? Paula looks guilty to me.

Wow. I hate to admit this, but I missed that second link too!

I clicked on the first one, read the article, and was kind of expecting to see a link to something more informative there. When I didn’t see anything, I googled the term, and ended up at that site eventually anyway.

I once tested into the 99th percentile for reading acuity. But that was 15-20 years (and many dead brain cells) ago. Maybe I can blame it on failing eyes or something, but it is kind of embarrassing

Free Paula!!!
I had no idea she was in actual pain. I've been making fun of her for being high all the time on TV and she has an excuse?!?!

Sorry Paula.

Well, the other link wasn't there before, mister smartie!! Ha! I have exposed you!!

Fear me, if you dare!...

Ok (more seriously), so sue me, the first link, with the phrase "she has Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome" (emphasis added) didn't lead to any description of the disease even though you'd expect it to, so I didn't click on the second one.

Besides, I do so have proof that Dean added that link later, in order to smear me on CBS. It's true, I swear. Bill Burkett told me so, himself...

Personally, except for having sympathy for Paula's physical pain, I couldn't care about any of this...

But the problem that's probably not going to go away is that of the "relationship"--as established by phone bills indicating direct phone calls from Paula (judge) to Corey (contestant)--are a violation of FCC regulations. Paula received calls to the number after it was printed in People magazine (terrible blur job), so it's be hard to convince anyone that it wasn't her calling.

Any investigation is going to put FOX in the hot seat and facing hefty fines. I wonder if FOX would charge them back to Paula (as Leslie Moonves promised to do if CBS was forced to pay the Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction" fine.
