Idol Threats

I loved Bo's performance but wasn't sure the audience and judges would. I was glad to be wrong.

I loved Carrie's song choice. I didn't agree with the judges.

I have to admit: Anthony gave his best performance yet, and picking a Celine Dione song was very gutsy--and he did it very well! It was the first time I was genuinely impressed with him. I've always thought he was a nice voice with no soul. Until now. If he can keep that up he's a contender still.

Vonzell was just--wow. The girl's got everything. It's been amazing to watch her mature as an artist. In the first several weeks of the show I really didn't know why she was there. Now I do. She just might win.

I have to say that this was the first time I genuinely enjoyed Constantine's performance. Obviously I like that kind of music, but it also felt like this was the first time he was really being himself--and the judges all ripped him. If he'd showed that personality throughout I would have been a bigger fan all along.

I was probably the only one who liked Scott's performance. I really did. That said: obviously others didn't, and Simon's probably right that he's gone this week.

(Speaking of which, someone must have told Paula Abdul how annoying she was getting. She was actually bearable this week.)

I hate to say it, Dean, but I disagree about Constantine. "This is How You Remind Me" is meant to be a grungy, emotional song, but he sang it way too cleanly. I'd have voted either Constantine or Scott off, as Constantine came across as a Bo-imitation this week.

What is this weird hangup America seems to have with American Idol? There's a good deal more professional options. Why watch amateurs? I watched two episodes and thought the whole format inane and many of the performers were boring at best.

GeraldW - Sorry we dissappoint you. A person of your erudition deserves better than us. So don't let us hold you up from being on your way.

Second week in a row Bo was the only one I truly liked. I didn't mind Carrie or Vonzell. Something about the Anthony performance just bugged me. I can't put my finger on it. Constantine is always evil, but tonight I also thought he was truly awful as well. But the powers of darkness will preserve him yet again. Scott should take Simon's advice to heart. He's going home tomorrow.

It's like I said a few weeks ago, which I might as well re-post here:

By the way, as a reminder: I have written music reviews professionally, taken vocal and singing lessons, and have a personal library of well over 2,000 compact discs. I don't want to hear anymore from you people who want to snarl and sneer about this show. Simply put: you don't know what you're talking about. If you don't like it, fine, don't watch it, but get over your snotty, sneery selves. Those of us who like this show are not slack-jawed morons and we are not people who lack musical taste.

I'll even go further: I love this show because it gives young people, almost invariably young people who have been taking music lessons and singing ever since they were very small children, an opportunity they would never otherwise have. And it's not based on some lame "Star Search" format where you rely on judges for everything--early on the judges decide who the 24 contestants will be but after that it's based entirely on the viewing audience to choose who they want. Those who can connect with the viewers do well. Those who don't, don't. It's very much a meritocracy--and the talent is often impressive.

This, in my view, is television at its finest, and this year's show is the best yet, probably because they raised the age limit and they have some real maturity on stage now.

I can already predict that Bo Bice will have a recording career, and a good one, even if he loses the competition. I can't wait to buy his first album, and to hear his guitar playing, his singing, and some of his original songs. I'll bet they're good.

I think it'll come down to Bo and VonZell (possibly Carrie). Assuming his band and original songs are any good, I'm also looking forward to buying his first album.

Also, if they make (another) remake of Jesus Christ Superstar, he'd be perfect in the role of Jesus.

Dean Esmay:
I don't know, that would require some work on the part of the arrangers; the role of Jesus is a tenor who does a lot of wailing.

I thought tonite's show really sucked. Anthony was the only one who did well, with Vonzell almost making it. I love Carrie and Bo, but they were both somewhere else tonight. Didn't like either Contantine's or Scott's performances at all. But I guess that's just my taste in music.

I believe that ABC is doing an "exposé" on Idol. Supposedly, someone's claiming that Paula provided off-stage assistance for some performers in return for horizontal off-stage dynamics. Or something like that. Maybe she's just chastened by the threat of the program?

I've been annoyed by Scott Sonnon all year. But I thought the song he sang last night was beautiful! Never heard it before. Great lyrics, and he delivered a lot of emotion.

So now they'll probably dump him, lol.

btw I love the idea of Paula Abdul being 'exposed' as some kind of puppet master... that is too friggin' funny for words. I mean half the time she's either drunk or on muscle relaxants or else she's just LIKE THAT half the time. This will be ABC's PaulGate. (can I get that trademarked?)

I felt that Bo's was the best performance of the night, and the shades were perfect (get stuffed on that one, Cowell).

Carrie and Vonzell were good, but not especially inspiring this week. Baby V did better than Carrie, which has been a recent trend. I'm on the verge of changing my prediction for the final two to Bo and Vonzell.

Anthony, while a fine singer, has never done much for me. I agree with the judges that last night was probably his best performance on the show.

I've always considered Constantine for his overall performance, not just his singing. My wife is a total Constantine nut. Last night, we both felt that the only thing saving him from getting booted this week was Scott's horrendous performance. Not that Scott's was worse than Constantine's, but Scott doesn't have the solid backing of weeks of strong performances or the throng of horny girls and women to keep him afloat.

But Constantine sounded like a cat screeching to me — and not even in tune much of the time.

Scott was almost always out of tune on the longer notes. It seemed as though the song had some great, stirring lyrics, but I had a hard time listening to them through his — dare I say it — "pitchy" singing.

Anyway, Scott's out, and Constantine is clinging by a thread. If he doesn't come back strong next week, his head's on the chopping block.

Bo and Constantine should have traded songs. Bo couldn't hit the high notes for Train and Constantine's voice is too "smooth" for Nickleback's rough style.

Constanine has a smooth and higher pitched voice while Bo has (can have) more of an edge to it.

Judging by your list of "related posts", it would seem you've written more about American Idol than any other single subject on Dean's World lately.

I think it's time for an intervention...

Jerry Kondraciuk:
Bottom Three: Constantine, Vonzell &Scott. I'm not sure what you were listening to Dean, but Constantine was horrendous last night. Based on the performances, he should be the one to go. I say this having not written professional reviews, taken no singing lessons, and have maybe 25 cds in my library. Thats the beauty and tragedy of American Idol. The best singer doesn't necessarily win.

However, I'm sticking to my Simon Cowell "kiss of death" conspiracy. Each week, he has pegged someone to go home and he was correct. The Simon drones will pull their votes from Scott this week and boom, he is gone. If that doesn't happen, I fear another shocker with Vonzell getting the boot. The only good thing about that is we will get to see Paula literally explode afterward.

Chris: I post on American Idol the nights it airs--Tuesday and Wednesday. That's two posts a week. Such an avalanche! ;-)

Jerry: I'm sticking to my guns. Constantine did a pretty good job, he got slammed for being so out-of-character with the persona he's constructed in the last six-eight weeks.

I understand most people don't see it my way though. I would agree that Scott and Constantine should be in the bottom three. Not sure who the last one should be.
