Defending the liberal tradition in history, science, and philosophy.

Like I Said: Rousseau Sucks

Professor Rummell has an excellent piece up which compares the French revolution with the American revolution, and the very different philosophical underpinnings of each. Click here to read it.

Along the way, he defines fairly well how the so-called "right" in America--a ragtag coalition of paleoconservatives, neoconservatives, neolibertarians, classical liberals, freedomists, etc.--sees the state.

He also demonstrates pretty well some of what I was saying a couple of weeks ago about Rousseau (see below).

Good read. I learned something. It reminds me (just a little, because I didn't really didn't know that history) of what I said regarding the 2004 Libertarian-Green presidential debates:

Certain words and phrases got twisted in an Orwellian fashion. For example, [the Green candidate] Cobb was in favor of "democracy" to the extent that it legitimized handover of as much control to the government as possible. Cobb was all over the phrase "we the people" but had an apparent contempt for what we the people choose in a free market. He spoke of "rights" to take income away from our neighbors. Needless to say, these radical, long discredited ideas, required something of a soft sell, it is just that I, like many people, have a little filter in my brain that forces me to listen beyond the spoken words. The published Green Party platform, particularly the "Social Justice" section, confirms that the party is little more than a friendly face to Marxism.
