American Idol Discussion
Dean
You know during the semi-finals this year it seemed like the men were generally better than the women but now that they're down to the final 11 (10 after tonight) that's not so clear.
I must say that last year's show and contestants made little impression on me, but this year the performances are very, very good.
In looking at the final 11 contestants, it's almost a given: the final two are likely to be Bo Bice and Nadia Turner, and I don't even know how I'd pick which of the two I liked better. Of this evening's performances, I have to admit though that Carrie Underwood and Vonzell Solomon blew me away. If they stay consistently that good they'll be amazing.
Sad to say, while I really like little Mikalah Gordon, I think she'll be leaving the show tomorrow. %-)
I'm pretty sure at least a half-dozen people coming out of this year's show are going to wind up with recording contracts no matter what happens.
(By the way, as a reminder: I have written music reviews professionally, taken vocal and singing lessons, and have a personal library of well over 2,000 compact discs. I don't want to hear anymore from you people who want to snarl and sneer about this show. Simply put: you don't know what you're talking about. If you don't like it, fine, don't watch it, but get over your snotty, sneery selves. Those of us who like this show are not slack-jawed morons and we are not people who lack musical taste.)

I agree, too, that it's time for Mikahala to go. She was off-tune through most of her song. I think it's probably close to the end for Anthony, though he's got a pleasant enough voice.
I agree, yet again, with your picks for the top, though there are a couple who could steal it away if there're a couple of bad performances. I'm pretty astounded by Scott, though he lacks the "idol" image, Carrie Underwood is incredible. I wish she had a contract now so I could buy some stuff. And when Anwar is on, he's very memorable.
Nadia was the clear leader of the Women until last night. I think her performance could have been gear but it just wasn't ready. Carrie was spectacular, she's always had the best tone, but a limited appeal. Last night broadened her audience a lot.
If Jessica could tone down her eyeshadow a bit and learn to do more on stage than just squatting &bouncing, her terrific performances would put her in the top 3 or 4.
I think Vonzell and Nikko are underappreciated. Both have great voices but can't seem to catch a break with critics.
Bo &Anwar are clearly the leaders of the Men. I think Anwar is actually better, but Bo is much more consistent.
That said - Bo and Nadia, yep. Carrie Underwood is amazing, but I think she's wooden and expressionless - I think she'll be a better "performer" when she gets some age on her.
This just in - error in the number display last night, new show tonight, vote-off tomorrow. See Idol Tongues for details.
Heh. Sorry for the book.
It's true... more singing tonight and a re-vote tomorrow.
My top three at this point are Bo, Nadia, and Anwar - though the last two didn't have terrific performances last night. Carrie could sneak into that group if she can keep up the quality she had last night.
I don't see anyone else on the show as being in their league, but all are capable of very good performances.
Scott Savol is bizarre. He looks like Billy Bob Thornton in Slingblade, speaks like a gangsta rapper, and has a voice that sounds like it came out of Mo-Town back in their glory days.
I think both Bo and Anwar are going to the end too, as both have good voices, are handsome guys, and can perform.
Carrie has a great set of lungs and could go the distance, too.
I really like Scott, I think he is an entertainer, but I think he is too much of a freak to go much further.
