and the only way they were able to do it so easily was because we lacked a sufficient fence (i.e., our own damned fault.)

Sorry Michael, I don't know squat about fences in Atlanta, but I just can't let this statement go by unchallenged. YOU were the VICTIM of a crime - it is NOT YOUR own damned fault. Blame the scum sucking, loser, asshole punk that felt he was entitled to YOUR property, not yourself.

A friend of mine is a contractor in Atlanta and just recently put up a six-foot privacy fence around a large lot in Tucker. Fine work, I might add. If you want his contact number, send me an email. I believe it is listed on my information above this post.

Heh. I do blame that person. I just know it likely wouldn't have happened if I had a fence.

Michael, you might find a pit bull terrier more efficacious and less expensive than turning your property into a walled-off concentration camp.

I always chuckle over the yard signs that warn trespassers of the viciousness either of the dog or, even better, the dog's owner, and admonished that:

"Survivors will be prosecuted."

Arnold,

I'd be worried the Pit Bull would kill my dog.

As well, a fence would improve the property and probably add more value than it would cost.

Mr. Demmons,

My girlfriend's family has two pitbulls. They are some of the sweetest, most friendly dogs I've ever met. If you train the dog right and introduce it to your dog at a young age you should not have any problem. The breed does tend to be aggressive toward other dogs. What kind of dog do you have currently? Pit Bulls are the "Assualt Weapons" of the dog world. They get a bad rap because the have a scary name.

CVD: I think Pit Bulls are sweet dogs. They're dangerous only because people tend to train them to be. Plus, they have a very difficult time letting go when they bite.

I have a Labrador Retriever who would probably annoy the shit out of a Bullie. If I was the Bullie, I'd probably "take her out," too! :-)

just me:
a privacy fence to be successful against invasion by those who want your stuff needs to be solid, well built and at least a good 7' to 8' high. you can get fencing 8' for about $70 a roll at most of the local home hardware stores.... posts need to go at least 18" below ground and 8' above for an 8' fence. you also need to have a stretching implement if you install chain link.

personally, i'd go for a solid fence so interested thieves can't select from your offerings before they get inside...

unfortunately, it is not legal to electricize a fence in a residential area. (big no no)

and in addition to a fence, you need a fair size pair of dogs .... one dog can be rendered helpless rather quickly, a pair are far more intimidating...
