Note this morning from Robert Cox of the Media Bloggers Association (MBA):
In regards to your post, Coleman To The Rescue which reads:
"The Blogosphere's top legal team, the Coleman Law Firm, has taken on Mike Bates as a client against Tulsa World's baseless threats Jeez. The blogosphere has its own legal team now. What next? Can we get a masseuse? Because that would be really handy after all those long hours flaming over a hot keyboard..."
Your post does not accurately reflect the role the MBA played in this case or mention that Ron is operating under the auspices of our Legal Defense Initiative. The size of your readership makes this a special concern.
I contacted Michael Bates on behalf of the Media Bloggers Association when I learned (via Ed Cone) of the threats against Batelines from the Tulsa World. After reviewing the matter with Michael, I decided to offer Michael immediate, expedited membership in the Media Bloggers Association so he would have the benefit of being part of our association. One of the primary benefits to someone in Michael's situation is that we have a "Legal Defense Initiative". Ron Coleman serves as the General Counsel for the MBA and manages our "Legal Defense Initiative". After getting off the phone with Michael, I referred the matter to Ron Coleman. You know the rest.
The purpose of publicizing MBA efforts on behalf of members is to raise awareness, increase our membership and thereby increase the effectiveness of our organization. Enhanced effectiveness means, among other things, an improved ability to push back in cases like Batesline v. Tulsa World.
MBA members can you tell you that I look for every opportunity to promote MBA members who contributes to the organization. Ron is such a member and I make sure folks know of Ron's contribution to the MBA at every opportunity. Your post, however, conveys the false impression that the MBA had no role when, in fact, both Ron and I are acting as members of the MBA in supporting Batesline.
