Dean's World

Defending the liberal tradition in history, science, and philosophy.

Arlen Specter

I know he's the scourge of many Republicans and commentators who describe themselves as social conservatives. I consider him a brave Republican who often goes against his party and does what he thinks is right (and isn't that what every politician should be doing?)

Arlen Specter has cancer:

The statement said Specter received testing on February 14 at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. The testing involved biopsy of a lymph node and biopsy of bone marrow.

The lymph node was positive for Hodgkin's disease. The bone marrow biopsy showed no cancer. A follow up PET scan and MRI established Specter has stage IVB Hodgkin's disease, the statement said.

There are going to be people on the extreme right who will salivate over this - just as people on the far left get giddy when life throws curves to their "enemies."

I hope we can all wish Senator Specter and his family well. I know I will.

I do hope that no one gloats over this type of situation. I wouldn't wish such a fate on my worst enemy. (even michael moore)

I've had my disagreements with Senator Specter, but so has the left. Feminists still seeth over his valient defense of Clarence Thomas.

For the most part, when justice or his party really needed him, he's shown up.

I wish him the best.

Arlen Specter is a good man. I hope he pulls through this thing.

I don't wish this on anybody either. And I admire Arlen Specter. He stands for the best in the Republican party. Yes, I, too, admire his valiant defense of Clarence Thomas. I must pray for him. Bless him and his. Bless you and yours.

I think the Republican party needs more people like Arlen, not less. As a Pennsylvanian with an (I) as my affiliation, I'm proud to say I voted for him every time I had the chance. I'm hoping I have another chance.

In the statement, Specter said: "I have beaten a brain tumor, bypass heart surgery and many tough political opponents; and I'm going to beat this, too. I have a lot more work to do for Pennsylvania and America."

Senator Specter's courageous attitude in the face of such a personal challenege epitomizes the American spirit. I wish him all the best in this time of personal suffering. I hope all those beyond Dean's World share our sentiment.

A good friend of mine had Hodgkin's disease a couple years ago. Chemotherapy pulled him through. The good news is that Hodgkin's has an 85% recovery rate -- if you're going to get cancer, that's the kind to get. The bad news is that it's still not a pleasant experience.

I wish him the best in getting through this.

Michael,

Where in hell do you get off saying that some on the right will salivate over this? That is a damned insult!

I've large and enduring disagreements with Senator Specter (being one of the people who urged the GOP caucus to deny him his chairmanship), but I don't wish him ill and pray for his speedy and complete recovery.

Hear hear, Michael. I'm not a great fan of Arlen Specter, and I was certainly rooting against him last November, but I wouldn't wish this on anyone. I wish him all the best.

I was also someone who registered as a Republican again (I had been an independant) just to vote against Specter in the primary. I am not a big fan of Specter.

However, I wish him well in this case, and hope he beats Hogskin's disease.

Free Republic is just a Right-Wing version of Democratic Underground. Rancid, I must say, but it doesn't have anything to do with Mark Noonan or any of the other conservative commenters here in Dean's World.

Michael has a small point, the thread includes several snide remarks about early retirement, and a definite snark about "WHAT Republican [got sick]?" Feh. Kick a man while he's down, why don't you?

On the other hand, the prayers and good wishes for someone those people do not agree with outnumber smartasses by 3 to 1.

Food for thought.

Now I'm wondering how the DUers feel about this?

Hmmm. Again, some snide remarks, one of which was "GOOD," but still, there's an awful lot of good wishes for the man. I didn't count, but I'm sure it's at least 3 to 1 there as well, if not better.

Maybe those crazy guys are human, after all? ;)

Oh, and Mark: please note that Michael said those on the "far right," ok?
