Iraqi Election Quiz

Another blogger has an interesting poll: How many Iraqis will risk their lives to vote? Unfortunately the question is poorly phrased, because the proper answer is "well under 50%." Because we know the vast majority of Iraqis (more than 70%) plan to vote, and, we also know that in only 3 of Iraq's provinces is there any real political violence--the vast majority of the country has been peaceful and stable for almost two years.

The only concern is how much violence there'll be in the three Sunni provinces, and how many people in those areas are willing to take a risk. My bet is that a majority will because they have no particular love for the "insurgents" who are so radical they actually want to stop voting.

It's a little worse than that, I think. I have read, but have not verified, that the four insecure provinces comprise about half the population. So it very well may be the case that a large proportion of those voters will be risking their lives. I hope not, but there is that chance.

I'd like to think that an equally interesting question is how will MSM treat the voters of Iraq who do risk their lives to vote. Somehow I suspect that the focus will be less on the voters who turn out and more on the ones that decide freedom is not worth the effort. Perhaps the story will be about those who would have voted if George Bush were not so incompetent.

Am I too cynical?
