ACLU Hoist With Its Own Petard

Instapundit notes that the ACLU is doing things it criticizes corporations and government for doing.

Now why is a former card-carrying member of the ACLU like me not a bit surprised at this news?

Reynolds is right: for many non-profit organizations these days, it's all about the money, and not about the cause. There are many noble exceptions of course, but it's distressing how so many of them are about nothing but scaring or infuriating people in order to get their donations. Tom Knudsoon had a series a few years ago that's still worth reading on this sme theme: Fat of the Land.

What I want to know is how on Earth did Michael Meyers get all the way from slasher films to ACLU Vice President when I can't even get Dean to link to my site?

Janelle :
Dean, sometime last week you wrote an excellent piece on the enviormental causes. I just read your link on Fat of the Land. That was sureal as one man noted after attending a meeting out in California. I thought of Michael Crichton once again and his new book, State of Fear. Goodness, a movie deal is already in the works. I hope it will be true to the book because it tells the truth about our enviorment and what it is really all about...Fat cats in the Fat Land.

I have been looking at the ACLU and have been flabergasted at the things they do and then as Reynold and you stated, turn around and do these things.

I have been studying the ACLJ, this week and I see they have had to go to court over Christmas! Pasco County, Florida. It is not over a Nativity Scene, but Christmas Trees! I'm not too happy now! Ban Christmas trees. They don't understand the first ammendment. A little boy wanted to hang some ornaments. The county has gone NUTS!!! It is ridiculous. I like, Jay Sekulow and his broadcast from Washington about the ACLU, you can call 1- 877-989-2255. They put out a booklet for free, Foundations of Freedom and receive the booklet for free. Then you can just go to the website Dean gave us and look up Jay. Hopefully Fox News will show up and embarress those folks. It may happen and I sure hope so!

Maplewood, New Jersey they are having and *Illegal* singing of Christmas songs outside a school! Bah humbug, bah bumbug!!!

Gee, (sarcasim) where is the ACLU!?!

How come here in San Antonio, Texas we are not going through this Dean? Everywhere I go I see decorated trees and music playing. Does Florida and the Bush family there getting attacked and this is why? What is going on and then I told you about New Jersey!

I really amd ANGRY Dean. People are told not to wear a t-shirt that has a religious figure or Christmas!

Sorry I posted three times but it's sad to me for children, our children here in the United States. Wonder if this is happening in Hawaii, the lone state not inside this country?

I agree with Janelle. I'm mad as Hell. What part of "the free exercise [of religion]" do these birds have so much trouble understanding? I have had it with Political Correctness. Merry Christ's Mass!

I get the impression that many otherwise sensible, libertarian-leaning types are afraid to bash the ACLU simply because it's called the ACLU. So what if these America-hating, religion-really-hating commies managed to score themselves a cool name to make themselves sound more reasonable and more all-American than they are? Would you vote Democrat just because you support democracy, or Republican because you like republics?

Back in the 1950s, the ACLU explicitly excluded totalitarians, including Communists as well as Nazis, from its Board of Directors. But in the late 1960s, we all relaxed our vigilance against Communism and they let them back in. The ACLU has become increasingly taken over by its Leftist (secularist, egalitarian) elements.

Fortunately, there are now some genuinely libertarian organizations that I can support, such as the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education and the Institute for Justice.

'Course, the fact that the ACLU let them back in, as opposed to letting them in for the first time, suggests that the ACLU never was that keen on liberty to begin with.

A conservative, William H. McIlhanie III, wrote a book "The ACLU On Trial", dissecting the history and ideology of that organization. He is an extremely interesting writer, a theistic Objectivist and member of the John Birch Society. His _style_. He also wrote a book "Klandestine", about how Delmar Dennis broke with the KKK, joined the John Birch Society, and testified against the murderer of Medgar Evans.
