Arafat the Monster

Probably the most obscene comparisons I see these days is the comparison between Yasser Arafat and the elected leaders of the Israeli state. Yasser Arafat did more to deny the Palestinian people any hope of freedom than any human being alive or dead, and could credibly be called the father of modern-day terrorism. The Boston Globe has a good summation of this evil man's life. The Wall Street Journal has more.

It is deeply distressing how so many people have chosen to make this man a martyr and a symbol of "the little guy vs. the powerful." Nothing could be further from the truth, and nothing could better illustrate just how insular and reactionary so many people who care to claim about human rights have become.

* Update * Don't miss this collection of fun facts about Arafat either. I know, I know, it's all rightwing lies, right?

He wasn't European, he wasn't American, he was sponsored (originally) by the Soviets, and he spouted the anti-imperialist/colonialist line so beloved by the intelligentsia.

Obviously, he must be the little guy.

Actually he wasn't really named Yasser Arafat, was not a native Palestinian, and tended to sit out warfare with Israel whenever conventional fighting was involved.

Although he occasionally claimed to have hailed from what are now the Palestinian territories, Muhammad Abdel Rahman Abdel Rauf al-Qudwa al-Husseini was actually born in Egypt in 1929, the fifth child of a well-to-do merchant. He was educated in Cairo, although, after his mother's death when he was four, he lived at least part of the time with an uncle in Jerusalem.

I have never forgotten the murder of the Israeli athletes in that Munich Olympics of 1972, and I have never forgiven Arafat for that murder. I have never forgiven the United Nations for inviting him to speak before them two years later. I have never forgiven that Nobel Prize Committee for giving him that (Ig)Nobel Peace Prize. He may be a "saint" in their eyes, he's something else in mine.

He was never anything but a lying, hypocritical, murdering terrorist scumbag, and all I have to say to him is: Rot in Hell, motherfucker.

Harsh, I know. That's the way I am.

Well, he didn't vote for Bush. [snicker]

Okay, okay... Well, we know he's made war on his fellow Arabs, especially the Jordanians. We know he's intentionally murdered children, pregnant women, old people, paid kids to blow themselves up, acted as a Soviet puppet, blown up airplanes, made stolen UN money that wsa supposed to go to the Palestinian people, tortured and executed people for such "crimes" as being a homosexual or for advocating peace with the Jews...

But so far as I know he never personally raped anyone.
