Stolen Honor

I'm going to hope to be talking to Steve Gardner this morning. I did try to contact the Kerry campaign in Washington to see if I could get an interview with one of the tiny handful of vets who served with Kerry who support him, but alas, I could not get through to anyone who would talk to me.

Oh, you mean the ones who actually served with him on his boat?

Sometimes the level of bitterness and partisan braying at the end of the election season is just too much to bear. I wish I could sleep until November 3, but unfortunately I'll be manning phone banks in PA to get out the Kerry vote.

Jazz,

It's especially bad when people distort things, like when they pretend that people who work closely with someone don't know him because they weren't on the same boat as him. I can't stand people who distort things right before presidential elections either.

I just finished an hour-long conversation with Steve Gardner, who served personally on Senator Kerry's boat.

I have also had a lengthy conversation with the officer who was directly in charge of young Kerry while he was an officer there.

There are 254 men who served with Kerry in Viet Nam who are on the record as opposing him. There are five or six men who served with him personally who support him, only one of whom is actually willing to come out and talk to the press, and none of whom is willing to talk to people like me.

So draw your own conclusions, man. It's not like I didn't try.

Veterans for Kerry has a hell of a lot of vets who support Kerry, Dean. I've never heard you mention that. The fact that most of the so called vets for truth are partisan Republicans who would say anything to support Bush or any Republican doesn't seem to be mentioned either. That was an ugly time, and most of us don't like talking about it, and it doesn't have much to do with today. If it did, I'd talk more about Dubya's "participation" which you also don't talk much about. It's late in the game. Cross your fingers. One of us is about to be shot down. I don't know which, but it's not going to be pretty either way. Very sad.

You specifically asked me about men who served personally with Kerry, Jazz.

Of the men who served personally with Kerry, almost none support him, and of those who do, only one or two will talk to the press and none will talk to people like me. Draw your own conclusions.

The fact that most of the so called vets for truth are partisan Republicans who would say anything to support Bush or any Republican doesn't seem to be mentioned either.

It's not mentioned because it's not true. The accusation that the Swift Boat Vets for Truth are Republican shills is simply a partisan lie.

If it did, I'd talk more about Dubya's "participation" which you also don't talk much about.

I've talked about it. I've also asked about it in my interviews. The fact of the matter is that most Viet Nam veterans think Kerry's a scumbag. And the vast majority of the men who served personally with him think he's a scumbag. Does this matter to you? Perhaps not. It's still the truth.

It's late in the game. Cross your fingers. One of us is about to be shot down.

Not quite. Whether Kerry wins or loses on Tuesday, everything I said above is still true, and will not stop being true.
