Dean's World

Defending the liberal tradition in history, science, and philosophy.

Rick Santorum on the spot (Karol Sheinin)

While a lot of people associate Rick Santorum with anti-gay comments, I've held a grudge against Santorum for an entirely different reason: he supported the ultra liberal, tax hiking Arlen Specter. I don't fall for candidates that often (and seeing as I'm nearly always working for one, that doesn't say a lot for the candidates out there), but the two that really affected me in the last few years were Herman Cain and Pat Toomey. They were both such decent men who took their issues, in both of their cases fiscal conservatism was the priority, so seriously. It was Cain's first race, for the retiring Zell Miller's seat, and he ran against two sitting Congressman. His name id was only at 50% when he lost in July with 30% of the vote (beating one of the Congressman and almost forcing the other into a runoff). It was a great first race and he'll certainly be back. Toomey was a different story. He was running against an incumbent and had the state's other Senator and the President of the United States line up against him. It was a squeaker despite this and Toomey supporters are right to hold Santorum and Bush accountable for Toomey's loss.

Anyway, I was looking forward to running into Santorum and asking him why he did what he did. I saw him yesterday at the Republican Jewish Coalition event and got to ask him my question on video. I can't say that he gave me a very straight answer but at the very minimum, I got him to admit that Arlen Specter was not going to be more conservative should he win in November, despite Santorum's support.

That's what I love about you Karol. Not afraid to confront people. Whee!

The Lehigh Valley may be the third-largest metro area in Pennsylvania, but it's not a place that our powerful state politicians usually come from. Toomey's challenge did certainly get a lot of True Believers buzzing--genuine conservatives have loved to hate Specter since I was little--but I think it was always likeliest to be most effective as a way to start getting his name mentioned as a senate candidate for the next go-round. That doesn't make Santorum's Specter endorsement more or less reprehensible, of course.

I am proud of my deviant "right to privacy lifestyle". I won't give it up until they pry it from my cold, dead fingers. Santorum is my enemy and I will always proudly oppose him without mitigation or apology.

John Cole of Balloon Juice has this to say about Alan Keyes:

"Alan Keyes, always the crowd pleaser:
Alan Keyes, the Republican candidate for a vacant U.S. Senate seat in Illinois, said Tuesday that Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter Mary is a "selfish hedonist" because she is a lesbian.

His comments came during an interview with SIRIUS satellite radio.

Keyes said: "The essence of ... family life remains procreation. If we embrace homosexuality as a proper basis for marriage, we are saying that it's possible to have a marriage state that in principal excludes procreation and is based simply on the premise of selfish hedonism."

Asked whether that meant Mary Cheney "is a selfish hedonist," Keyes said: "That goes by definition. Of course she is."

I used to like listening to him speak. I used to like watching his tv show. What a hateful little troll.

Commenting on Dean's World is a privilege, not a right. Dean is your host, you are his guest, and you should behave in that fashion. Dean is not your babysitter, nor is he your punching bag. Please remember this. In general, you are free to disagree with anyone on any subject you wish, but abusive behavior will not be tolerated.

Of course we all lose our tempers now and then. Dean freely admits to being imperfect in this regard, which is why regulars to this establishment will generally be cut more slack than people who we don't know very well.

Still: behave like an adult, or go find somewhere else to play. Thanks.
