Muslim women and the Olympics (Karol)

I was happy to see so many women from Muslim countries marching in the opening ceremonies of the Olympics yesterday. It seems I had overestimated the situation.

Link sent to me via my friend, and tireless activist for democracy in Iran, Banafsheh Zand-Bonazzi. Her father is Siamak Pourzand, a journalist held prisoner in Iran since November 2001. More on his story with links here.

You're indulging self-deception. The presence of any number of women from islamic states as competitors in the olympic games is no more an indicator of human freedom in any islamic society, than the presence of numerous khlkozniki with smiles plastered all over their faces at one of Josef Stalin's May Day parades indicated freedom and happiness in the land of your birth.

If you imagine otherwise, try to set up an eastern orthodox church, jewish synagogue or any other non-islamic religious center in just about any islamic land. You'd be a marked target for a bombing from day one.

The world needs fewer fools.

Janelle :
Arnold your last line touched a memory of what William Shakespeare said and I get a kick out of it... "Lord, what fools these mortals be!"

I have read some of Dean's posts where he pulls out a true writer's tool, the Fountain Pen sucking up the ink and very crafty uses the word, *mortals* in a dapper way!

Your wisdom Arnold is right on once again.

Commenting on Dean's World is a privilege, not a right. Dean is your host, you are his guest, and you should behave in that fashion. Dean is not your babysitter, nor is he your punching bag. Please remember this. In general, you are free to disagree with anyone on any subject you wish, but abusive behavior will not be tolerated.

Of course we all lose our tempers now and then. Dean freely admits to being imperfect in this regard, which is why regulars to this establishment will generally be cut more slack than people who we don't know very well.

Still: behave like an adult, or go find somewhere else to play. Thanks.
