Dean's World

Defending the liberal tradition in history, science, and philosophy.

Taking Michelle's Test

Michelle Malkin has a test. Here are my answers:

1. I have never voted for a Democrat in my life.

I have many times, and I hope to again.

2. I think my taxes are too high.

Yes I do.

3. I supported Bill Clinton's impeachment.

Yes I did. However, I also supported the Senate's "hung jury" result too. Sorry, Republicans.

4. I voted for President Bush in 2000.

I did. He was the only liberal progressive in the race.

5. I am a gun owner.

I am.

6. I support school voucher programs.

I do. As all true liberals do.

7. I oppose condom distribution in public schools.

I do not, so long as parents are informed.

8. I oppose bilingual education.

I do, with a few important caveats that you unfortunately don't bother asking about, Michelle.

9. I oppose gay marriage.

I do not.

10. I want Social Security privatized.

Just like Franklin Roosevelt, I do support this.

11. I believe racial profiling at airports is common sense.

Great way to get more Americans killed, Michelle. Are you nuts? NO WAY!

12. I shop at Wal-Mart.

I do.

13. I enjoy talk radio.

EEEEUUUUURRGH. Maybe. Sometimes. Other times I want to shoot the radio out of my car.

14. I am annoyed when news editors substitute the phrase "undocumented person" for "illegal alien."

Mildly. Depending on context.

Okay, mostly it's a cop-out phrase. Americans do have a right to control their borders.

15. I do not believe the phrase "a chink in the armor" is offensive.

I do not.

16. I eat meat.

Lots of it. Vegetarianism is unnatural and unhealthy, and bad for the planet.

17. I believe O.J. Simpson was guilty.

Not entirely sure. Probably.

18. I cheered when I learned that Saddam Hussein had been captured.

So hard my throat hurt, and my hands still hurt from clapping so hard.

Why haven't they stripped him naked and stuck him in a cage in the middle of Baghdad for everyone to spit on and throw things at? That's all I want to know.

19. I cry when I hear "Proud To Be an American" by Lee Greenwood.

Bitch. I hate you.

...yes.

20. I don't believe The New York Times.

Hmm. 50% of the time? Which is pretty pathetic for a major news daily, come to think of it.

By the way, I suppose some would say I have no business answering this list of questions. After all, I am a Pale Penis Person.

But you know what?

The ultimate minority is the individual.

Dean,

Vegetarianism is bad for the planet? I thought it was the other way around. Can you give me some sources to look at? Thanks.

Well, think about it. If everyone was a vegetarian, we'd be murdering the plant life of the planet even faster, the green-house gasses would increase exponentially and we'd all die in a flaming fireball of methane!!!!!!!

1. I have never voted for a Democrat in my life.

I have voted for Democrats, for Republicans, for Libertarians, and for Libertarians.

2. I think my taxes are too high.

I think taxes on the people above me are too high.

3. I supported Bill Clinton's impeachment.

I opposed his impeachment for adulterous sex. For that, he deserved impoundment by Hillary. I think he should have been impeached for selling military secrets to Communist China.

4. I voted for President Bush in 2000.

Over Gore, Nader, and Buchanan, yes. Over Kerry, yes again.

5. I am a gun owner.

Yes. Proudly.

6. I support school voucher programs.

Yes, I do.

7. I oppose condom distribution in public schools.

Sex is a mystery and a sacrament, and therefore ideally condoms should be distributed only in the holy temples of the Gods and the Goddesses.

Schools should teach reading, writing, math, science, geography, history, and the classics of Western literature.

8. I oppose bilingual education.

Yes.

9. I oppose gay marriage.

Absolutely. Not. Marriage is the sacred context of total commitment within which all sex, homosexual and heterosexual, should take place. Sex is holy, including both manly sex and the ecstatic tribadic embrace of two women.

10. I want Social Security privatized.

Yes.

11. I believe racial profiling at airports is common sense.

We need ideological profiling. Terrorists and those suspected of terrorist activities or associations should not be allowed into this country, much less on our airplanes. Nobody from Saudi Arabia should ever be allowed to set foot on American soil unless they are fleeing from that center of all Muslim tyranny and will join us in fighting it. There is no Constitutional right to immigrate into this or any other country. We are at War.

12. I shop at Wal-Mart.

There isn't a Wal-Mart anywhere near where I live. I shop at Larry's Market (which includes a fine restaurant), at the Crossroads shopping mall, and at Bellevue Square.

13. I enjoy talk radio.

I don't find much time to listen to radio. I'm too busy reading blogs and books. I like G. Gordon Liddy. Too bad Leonard Peikoff isn't broadcasting any more. He was the best ever.

14. I am annoyed when news editors substitute the phrase "undocumented person" for "illegal alien."

Yes, I am. They should be called criminal aliens instead, especially if they are terrorists.

15. I do not believe the phrase "a chink in the armor" is offensive.

No, I do not. If anything, I find Political Correctness offensive.

16. I eat meat.

Yes, I do. Like lions, eagles, and other beasts and birds of prey, I enjoy feasting on the flesh of slain animals. I think it's great.

17. I believe O.J. Simpson was guilty.

He's probably guilty as Hell. However, I support our system of trial by jury. If jury verdicts, Supreme Court decisions, or elections don't go my way, I don't demand a recount.

18. I cheered when I learned that Saddam Hussein had been captured.

Yes! Dean already said everything there is to say about that.

19. I cry when I hear "Proud to be an American" by Lee Greenwood.

Yes!

20. I don't believe the New York Times.

I believe the Weekly World News as much as I believe what was once a great newspaper. I often think that only the John Birch Society, the Ayn Rand Institute, and Alain de Benoist are the only people who understand what's going on in this world.

I can tell you one way that vegetarianism is harmful to animals ... more small rodents die at the hands of agricultural equipment than the number that are specifically killed for consumption.

I got every question except the first one. I did vote for a Democrat, once.

Of course, that's because I live in Illinois, and good ol' "Lyin' Ryan", our former governor, was both 1) Republican and 2) a world-class crooked bribe-takin' lyin' thievin' sonofabitch. So when he was up for re-election in 1996, I pulled the lever for his opponent, who was Democrat -- but not on the take.

... in 2000, I just abstained.

It isn't that we need "racial profiling" so much as we need the lifting of the "anti-racial profiling protections".

10 people are pulled aside and asked 10 minutes of questions due to wires/batteries/silly putty/ or who knows what non-racial reason.

If they are all Norwegian grandmothers, it is just another day in the sky.

But if they happen to all be Syrian, it becomes a 'clear' case of racial profiling.

The NAACP here in Seattle had rallies and marches (and on and on) about a 'ticket rate discrepancy' from the Washington State Patrol. Very steamed. In the full report, it was the 'nighttime speeding ticket' rate. Some insane percentage were minorities. But... minorities were _3_times_ more likely to get a warning rather than a ticket compared to 'whites'. All the pull-overs are logged.

Is this racial profiling? Or not?
Does a rule limiting the number of Arabs in 'secondary screening' make any sense at all?

Personally, I could not care less what race someone is - if the check for explosives residue beeps you go into secondary security. (It does every single time for my sister-in-law, there are drawbacks to being certain types of engineer ;)

IOW: The _appearance_ of racial profiling bothers me not one whit _if_ the people doing the screening are focused on other aspects of interest. Even though those screeners aren't going to tell _us_ why this list of people was pulled over. There had better be a check/oversight somewhere.

On vegetarianism, spend some time at the Beyond Vegetarianism site.

While grain-fed meat requires much more intensive farming techniques, free-range meats actually require less than just eating the grains. Eating wild game is even better, if you can do it, becuase it not only requires no farm land but also is the ecologically responsible thing to do.

Mostly I made the comment to make people think. The "Diet For A Small Planet" folks make a lot less sense than they seem to. Truth of the matter is that we're using less and less land for agriculture all the time, due to modern farming techniques, so there's no crisis one way or the other.

Unless we run out of energy sources to make modern agriculture continue to work its miracles, of course.

Oh dear. I'm a Steven Malcolm Anderson clone. Except for two things. 1) Wal-Mart. There's one near where my parents live that I drop by when I visit them. 2)OJ. I wasn't on the jury. I don't know if OJ was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. But I have been on juries and you have to have been on one to understand exactly how much that 'reasonable doubt' does constrain you.

Timothy Snyder:
We still pay far less than any industrialized nation (except Japan and South Korea), and the way I see things, during the 8 years of Clinton, things were rolling along smooth (economically). We were paying down the deficit, lowering interest rates, preserving social security.

Now the one of the things that a good leader does, at least it's true in the military, is when things are going well, DON'T CHANGE THEM!!!

It was clear that Bush wanted to give more money back to Americans, and I respect that. I like paying practically no taxes in comparison to European nations. But I don't want us to give tax cuts if it means that we are going to diminish our federal, and states ability to provide the necessary services to the people. As a country, we have had some outstanding social programs and funded some very progressive initiatives all across the country. All I'm saying is that our tax burden is light.

Want tax cuts for businesses? Provide more incentives for creating jobs and keeping those jobs in America.

This is one reason I support a low-cost (free?) National Healthcare Plan at tax-payer expense. If businesses are no longer responsible for providing health care for their employees, that would free up lots of capital.

Also, I know social security has been a successful program, but now it's time to completely privatize it. If we take THAT burden off business and healthcare as well, our business sector will flourish like never before.

See what I'm saying? I'm not some left-wing socialist wealth redistribution freak (or Super Freak in tribute to the late Rick James), I just don't believe we are doing all we can to help our citizens or business. Cutting taxes is not the answer nor is raising taxes.

Tim, most of the Bush deficit is related to the War on Terror.

Alas, only about five-eighths of it (62.5%) is due to DoD increases, and that's according to NRO. (they were trying to deflect criticism of Bush's DoD increases, but I think they blew it. Heh)

What most folks don't grasp is that Clinton had the only peacetime administration between 1940 and 2000. That's not knocking what he did, but let's keep things in perspective.
8.7.2004 1:57am
Timothy Snyder:
Most related to the WOT? I'll need to do some more research on that one. I think the massive tax cuts have something to do with it though.

So, we spent all that money and yet our chemical plants remain relatively unguarded? And that makes us safer...how?

And btw, why is the administration releasing reports that "due to dimished chatter" we are worried about a pending terrorist attack...yet our chemical plants...rent-a-cop? That tantamount to tipping our intelligence hand. Could it be that they are using the terror threats for political gain? I hope not, but I wouldn't put it past Karl Rove.

While I reject Michael Moore, I also place an equal distaste for the actions of Mr. Rove.
8.7.2004 2:25am
Casey Tompkins (mail) (www):
Tim, right now it's late, so...

Those numbers may be obsolete, now. I'm surprised you didn't jump on the fact that nearly 40% of the deficit is non-DoD related. I'm guessing that the lower rates were offset by higher revenue. Ask Dean, he probably has the numbers memorized by now. :)

Can't say anything about guarding chemical plants; haven't heard much about that, although I also haven't heard much discussed about hijacking semis filled with dangerous materials, but I've heard that mentioned before.

Also can't say much about the "diminished chatter" comment. I have heard about the recent alerts regarding New York City, and some speculations that a recently captured AQ operative (in Pakistan, IIRC) who was -apparently- deeply involved in the AQ use of email, websites, and PGP, resulted in useful keys to decipher current AQ email.

Some (Dunnigan, for example) have said that recent "revelations" about suspected attacks on New York are psyops to rattle any possible operatives who are focused on New York. "Are they onto us, Abdul, or not!?"

So, perhaps, they may be some useful reasons for some of the current adminstration announcements.

I'm (as Ara likes to say) just saying... :)
