Dean's World

Defending the liberal tradition in history, science, and philosophy.

It Didn't Work

Remember we told you all that Atlas Shipping had held Operation Give's check, and seemed to be confused about where our money was? And how they finally promised to make good after holding our money for a month and not returning our phone calls?

Yeah. Well. Empty promise. They didn't. And they aren't taking our calls again.

We'll be putting up a copy of the cancelled checks soon. This company ran off with $30,000 of Operation Give's money and despite repeated contacts with attorneys and endless attempts to get them to just refund our money, they just won't do it.

You can get the blow-by-blow right here on the Chief's site.

This has been a depressing experience to say the least. They ran off with $30K earmarked for Iraqi kids and American soldiers. Damn it. Talk about learning an expensive lesson.

* Update * If you want to see when the checks were issued and cleared click here. We obscured the account numbers but you can see everything else, including when these checks cleared. These people have had our money for well over a month, and they won't make good.

Somebody involved should get that ABC monkey Stossel on the case. He used to feast on whacking corp. greedheads before he became a burr in Baba Wawa's ass.

Instead of wasting your life complaining about this shipping firm, take them to court. That's the ultimate reality check on the legal validity of any claim.

But if you are going to do that, it might be advisable to cease badmouthing them online to the world. You might only damage your case or even make you subject to a lawsuit that, at least in theory, they could win against you.

Dean: what can actually be done from here to set the situation right? Do you want more publicity again to put pressure on Atlas Line? Do you want a call to people in Atlanta to get involved and start calling the press etc?

I read the entire Wiggles post and I'm going to be as gentle as possible: WHACK, Wake Up: Run do not walk to the FBI Fraud Division, the State Attorney General, and a lawyer. Call now. This is a rip-off. They may be out of business tomorrow. The flood of emails and calls last time did not generate a refund. They have had their opportunity to resolve it. Now it is theft. Do not fear bad publicity; your reputations preceed you guys and everybody loves you. Call Now. All three. You're living on hope.

(Once I had to call the FBI regarding a bogus $82,000 certified check. They were very nice.) You have a chance because the office is open. Don't delay.

Hope I wasn't too rough. I have great respect for your work and 200 lbs of shoes for Hook in container number three. I just don't want you to lose persepective. With great admiration, jane

Dean - you have to get the cops, local and the feds involved. Enough time has gone by, so, y'all have to act ASAP, there is no time to be sitting back and examine options!!! Just my 2 cents!!!

I agree with most folks. As much as legal action is likely to tie up the money for some time, it is time to put the REAL heat on these people. Don't dismiss the fact that the polic / FBI will likely be very sympathetic to your cause, too. It's not like you were trying to send money to the ACLU, you were trying to help kids and soldiers, and many of the the FBI / police are likely to be EX-soldiers.

Meanwhile you should pick up the phone and call the FBI. How hard could that be?

I just sent an email to the White House. I figured, why not go to the top? This would make a great photo opportunity for them.

Catch 22:
Operation Give, Inc. needs to forget about it.

Write it off as a lost cause, corporate mismanagement. After all the only thing they are dealing with is freely donated money from others which the donors presumed would be efficiently used to send toys to Iraqi children as gifts. I do not see their actions unlike any other vast corporate charities which in fact skim off the top to pay corporate fees to administrators and sometimes a small portion of dollars contributed actually end up as designated. And sometimes more efficiently. On the other hand, you are dealing with people at every level and in this instance going through different countries. Atlas did ship the containers right ?

Let the buyer beware. Charity begins at home.

Somehow, Iraqi chilldren aren't going to miss the toys. They have other problems.
