Forbes Russia Editor Shot

The CBC is reporting that the editor of the Russian version of Forbes has been shot dead outside his office. He's been known to be highly critical of organized crime there.

Russia is a crazy place, and I hate to say it but I would not be in the least bit surprised if Vladimir Putin's government does its best to look the other way at this. Putin is not a good man. I'm very glad the cold war is over and I never want it to restart, but sometimes I feel guilty that we are not a little more open in questioning his government.

Sadly I don't think there's a 'good man' who's suitable as a replacement even if things weren't semi-rigged over there.

Best I can say about Putin is that he's ruthless in a way that sometimes assists us.

It's also sad but true that regardless of the title, Russia has pretty much always been a country of Strongman rulers - from the first Tsars to the USSR to Yeltsin and Putin. Some have been mostly benevolent (at least towards the West) - Peter the Great, for example - but always, strongmen.

Commenting on Dean's World is a privilege, not a right. Dean is your host, you are his guest, and you should behave in that fashion. Dean is not your babysitter, nor is he your punching bag. Please remember this. In general, you are free to disagree with anyone on any subject you wish, but abusive behavior will not be tolerated.

Of course we all lose our tempers now and then. Dean freely admits to being imperfect in this regard, which is why regulars to this establishment will generally be cut more slack than people who we don't know very well.

Still: behave like an adult, or go find somewhere else to play. Thanks.
