My mother-in-law said she'd vote for Bush unless Kerry picked Edwards.
The Cheney pick helped make Bush more credible in 2000. In 1992, Al Gore was an excellent pick for Clinton, since Gore (at that time) was another "New Democrat," i.e. centrist and free market oriented, and picking him signaled that Clinton was very interested in changing his party's direction.
Dean
I think the choice is more important to fire up the base of a party than it is to a party's rank and file. Bush's pick of Cheney assured the GOP that an adult was nearby until GWB got used to the job. Since 9-11, Cheney's been pretty much AWOL and it's clear that no one would freak if he had quit the ticket for "health reasons".
I think your mother-in-law likes Edwards - I do too - but I can't vote for Kerry at this point because it's Kerry's show.

Commenting on Dean's World is a privilege, not a right. Dean is your host, you are his guest, and you should behave in that fashion. Dean is not your babysitter, nor is he your punching bag. Please remember this. In general, you are free to disagree with anyone on any subject you wish, but abusive behavior will not be tolerated.
Of course we all lose our tempers now and then. Dean freely admits to being imperfect in this regard, which is why regulars to this establishment will generally be cut more slack than people who we don't know very well.
Still: behave like an adult, or go find somewhere else to play. Thanks.
How many people have ever voted for a president because they liked his vice president?
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

(A direction they've reversed since 2000, alas.)
