Dean's World

Defending the liberal tradition in history, science, and philosophy.

Lawsuits and Webloggers

The subject of libel and weblogs is, I think, one that's going to be getting more attention in coming years. Now the funny thing is, in a way it seems almost as if the law will have to evolve backwards. 200 years ago, it would probably have been considered libel if you published defamatory statements in a pamphlet that perhaps a few hundred people might read. Since then the libel laws have sort of evolved to address print publications with tens or hundreds of thousands of readers, as our society has become more anonymous. Now, most weblogs have tens or hundreds of readers, yet what appears in one might well hurt someone's standing in community or profession.

The Online Journalism Review has an interesting article on libel and online journalism which discusses the challenge that this new medium creates for the law. Notably, our friend Justene, proprietor of Calblog, is featured.

Commenting on Dean's World is a privilege, not a right. Dean is your host, you are his guest, and you should behave in that fashion. Dean is not your babysitter, nor is he your punching bag. Please remember this. In general, you are free to disagree with anyone on any subject you wish, but abusive behavior will not be tolerated.

Of course we all lose our tempers now and then. Dean freely admits to being imperfect in this regard, which is why regulars to this establishment will generally be cut more slack than people who we don't know very well.

Still: behave like an adult, or go find somewhere else to play. Thanks.
