Don't Bogart That Link!

Joe Gandelman notes something that many other webloggers have complained about: sending a trackback ping without a link.

Joe only makes one mistake: some webloggers don't realize that this is considered rude. Many understand it instinctively but some don't. So I periodically try to say something about it as a gentle reminder. Goodness knows there are things I've done in the past that were considered rude without my realizing it.

Still, the point stands: you send a trackback as a way of saying "Hey! I linked you!" Otherwise, all you're doing is mooching traffic. It may not be what you intended, but it's what you're doing.

The first couple of times reading blogs, I mistakenly pinged when wanting to leave comments.

Then I figured I was doing a bad thing.

Mistakes are forgiven by me. I make more mistakes in an hour than most people do in a day. But to do it deliberately is wrong. I vow never, ever to do that. If I ever ping a trackback to somebody's blog, it will be with a link to that post. I don't like spammers of any kind, and will certainly never be one myself.

Web geeks have discussed this a long while back, and their two cents is that trackbacks need not necessarily have a link included. While I concur with the idea, the use of TB as a link notification was popularized because another (better and faster and leaner) protocol, Pingback, could not be implemented on MT blogs. While the TB specification dealt with posts "related" with each other, the Pingback spec specifically deals with the presence of links to another.

That doesn't mean that the Pingback spec isn't vulnerable to leachers; it's so easy to just delete a link once the ping has been sent. It's also become conventional wisdom these days that the relation of a post to another is best shown with a link. It's just that there are still some people stuck a few years behind when it comes to TBs.

Usually, I just link to the artickle in question. Is that the abuse what you're referring to? I'm not familiar with the use of trackbacks and was under the impression that they were specific to certain bogging systems, like Moveable Type or Typepad.

I also wish that people would not link without Trackback Pinging. Not that that's as big a deal, but I *do* like to know when I've been linked, and that's sort of the point of a Trackback ping. Plus it creates an automatic link back to one's site, so I don't see why one wouldn't do it.

Remember, Geoff, there's a lot of people out there with no trackback technology built into their blogging software that don't know about standalone trackback programs.

I feel like such a uber-goober but I've no idea how to use trackbacks. If I link some one I just do it...

I assume if they read me they'll notice and if they don't they probably don't care anyway. I'm so small time I just kinda don't think about it.

Actually, I don't have trackbacking on my blog either, or not yet anyway. I was merely promising that I will do the ethical thing if or when I do get such a system.

Well, the offenders I refer to use Movable Type, which actually makes it easy for even the laziest to ping my blog, as it has an "autodetect" feature -- link to the permalink for my entry, and MT automatically pings the correct URL.

Commenting on Dean's World is a privilege, not a right. Dean is your host, you are his guest, and you should behave in that fashion. Dean is not your babysitter, nor is he your punching bag. Please remember this. In general, you are free to disagree with anyone on any subject you wish, but abusive behavior will not be tolerated.

Of course we all lose our tempers now and then. Dean freely admits to being imperfect in this regard, which is why regulars to this establishment will generally be cut more slack than people who we don't know very well.

Still: behave like an adult, or go find somewhere else to play. Thanks.
