Athena
Have you met Athena? Interesting lady. A woman after my own heart, at least when she says this:
I generally refer to myself as a neo-liberal with a touch of realism. I believe in the power and rationale of capitalism, market integration and collective cooperation. However, I do not believe that a nation should sacrifice its sovereignty and security for the sake of multilateralism. I believe that international institutions can help with solving world problems, but I’m not a fan of the United Nations. The UN lends too much credibility to tyrannical dictators and I believe it is an inefficient collective security apparatus. My kinda girl.Too often, I think we all take democracy and freedom for granted in the West. Freedom cannot always be a bottom-up movement because it cannot be realized without context. “Imposition of freedom” sounds like an oxymoron, but we must focus not on the rhetorical, but look at the real results.
Check out her new weblog, which is now on our blogroll here. Let's just hope the other Athena isn't too jealous!
My kind of girl too. But about her handling of that firearm in the photo: If you look carefully, you can see she's leaning back slightly. You get better balance when you squeeze off a round (or a shell, in you're using a shotgun) by leaning slightly forward from the waist up. This is especially useful for women, whose center of bodymass is oriented closer to the lower abdomen than the chest and shoulders.
(I've seen recoils from fired shots almost put more than one shooter back on his or her butt, which of course is a range safety problem as well with a loaded firearm.)
In addition to that, eye and ear protection helps you save the usefulness of four pieces of human equipment that you can never replace (two eyes, two ears).
About her ideology. Yes, that too. Good stuff, Athena.

I didn't mean to sound like some sort of know-it-all gunjerk in my comment above. But in the past 10 years, I've fired some 19,000-20,000 rounds of ammunition, which is more than most people do in a lifetime. Unless they're working miniguns on a helicopter for Uncle Sam.

Arnold Harris:
You're a man who knows guns and your advice is very much appreciated. Thank you.
Yes, her ideology sounds very much like what the Goddess Athena Herself would communicate to us were She to do so.
nice
"Yes, her ideology sounds very much like what the Goddess Athena Herself would communicate to us were She to do so."
Ah yes, Pallas Athena. The only god or goddess in the Greek Pantheon worth worshipping, in my view. All the others, in their capriciousness and cruelty, resemble "Q" from Star Trek too much for me to really reverence:)
I echo the same Dean and Arnold. I liked what you said Arnold and you are right in the way the firearm stance should be.
I am laughing at myself because being a blonde (always my excuse, giggle giggle) I went to the US Border Patrol practice firing range. My dear ex husband. I hate that word...ex. Anyway, we went inside the practice room. There were a bunch of BP agents and they had ear muffs on. I looked at Gary, my husband and asked, "We are in the inside practice range and it's hot outside and the temperature is nice in here. Why are those guys wearing muffs!?! At that very moment...BANG, BANG, BANG the bullets were flying towards their targets. Gary and a few of his agents laughed at me hysterically! Man oh man, I grabbed my ears and yelled, Nevermind!!!"
I got a rude awakening and then took my turn to fire at the targets clasping my left hand under my right holding that 45 straight and to all of the people that laughed at me, well let's just say I did real well and understood the fun and practice of learning to shoot a gun. It is a great sport. Oh, and Dean you have said you own a gun and are going to teach your son how to use it. Good for you and I wish other Dads would do the same so we don't hear of the little ones getting into danger because they are curious.
Hah, thanks for the firearm tip.
And thanks for posting my site!
i found your site through hers. i've seen you around the blogosphere, but never jumped over here. i'm finding a few gun advocates, i miss shooting.
