Note To Fox News
God knows why, but at the moment I'm sitting here watching the typically execrable Hannity & Colmes show on Fox News. I note that they have on Susan Estrich guesting for Alan Colmes.
Fox News, do yourselves a favor: Fire that blowhard Hannity and name the show Estrich and Colmes. You want two thoughtful, interesting, and fair-minded left-wingers--left-wingers who are genuine, thinking liberals--who actually have a sense of humor and know how to make a logical, reasoned, consistent point? And challenge the right on their own terms? Give it to these two.
They'll tear up the ratings.
I would rather eat worms. Your recommendation would be my Room 101.
Hannity can stay. Colmes is a hack. Estrich is painful. I've hurt myself getting to the remote to turn her off before she speaks.
Why the hell would Fox want TWO liberals on the same show? That's what the rest of the media has, and look at the way they hemorhage viewers.
I used to find Susan Estrich annoying. That voice and that accent of hers make her sound smarmy and stupid. But once you get past that, you start to realize she's really quite smart, has a good sense of humor, and while she's partisan is certainly no hack or demagogue.
I'd like to see them fire the entire leadership of the DNC and put people like her and Donna Brazile in charge. The party needs a major cleanup and they're the kind people who could do it.
You know: rational, decent people who actually know how to think and how to engage their opponents' arguments head on without lowering themselves to ad hominem, slippery slope, and other logical fallacies.
I love Hannity's politics and I like him as a person but not as a talk show host.
I like Estrich the way I liked Rush when I was liberal. They are both funny and thoughtful.
Yours,
Wince
The shows theme is "Right-Left debate" not "Left-Left debate". I don't watch the show by the way, but what you are suggesting doesn't make any sense given the theme of the show.
Maybe they should fire Colmes and hire Estrich...
"Maybe they should fire Colmes and hire Estrich..."
exactly, Colmes has just become a door stop now
You might remind your readers that Susan Estrich is ex-campaign manager for Michael Dukakis former presidential election loser. The DNC and its band of anti-americans need to be booted out of office forthwith. Hannity and Colmes I can tolerate as long as neither is running for office. Liberalism isn't rational, it is a mental disorder. I have it on word direct from Michael Savage. That's Dr. Savage.
Perhaps they can add Estrich, and replace Hannity with another conservative, and add on another as well.
BRAVO for Dean! As someone who came out of the news biz but has LOVED talk radio since he was 12, I cannot understand the appeal of Hannity. The word "blowhard" is an understatement. I did a review of his first book on Amazon and talked about his respect for other views. He HAD IT when he first came on, but then turned into someone who outshouts his guest, cuts them off quickly for a commercial if it looks like they're scoring points, and who hates anyone who has a D in front of their name and loves anyone with an R in front of it.
To someone who is not in The Choir, people who are so intensely focused on one side purportedly monolpoizing all of The Truth has the opposite impact: I tend to find their arguments suspect and begin investigating in the opposite direction to see if the arguments hold up (and usually I find tons of inaccuracies).
Estrich is interesting. She upset a lot of Democrats when she worked with Arnold Schwarezenegger here in CA. I have been travelling with a piece she wrote to do a blog item on it but may not get around to it until Sunday (when I'm back at my own blog). She will conceed a GOPer has a good point and isn't into 100 percent demonization. Al Franken and other hardline liberals hate Alan C, but he is quite good. His radio show is one of the best on the air; he's good at eliciting information, taking a stand and letting those who disagree with him get an airing of their views. Hannity relies on lung power and name calling these days...which is NOT how he started out (Rush also evolved from a clever satirist to a mouthpiece for whatever The Elites in his party advocate, with some minor disagreements or occasional spurts of independencen).
I think my point would be to get rid of the tiresome "conservative vs. liberal" device and give those two their own show.
Maybe Colmes bad now, I don't know. I used to notice that Colmes could listen to a 10 minute Hannity rant and then leave him flat in 30 seconds. It always impressed me. Al Franken is full of it, Colmes is one of the most effective spokesmen for the left on television, and has an ability to skewer right-wing blowhards with rare finesse.
As for Estrich's record of having worked for Dukakis: so what? You can hardly fault her for the fact that the Dems made him their candidate. She has been a political insider for years and is very sophisticated and has managed not to become cynical. That's amazing.
She also has worked with Governor Schwartzenegger, which helps prove (to me anyway) that she's no partisan hack. If that wasn't already obvious, anyway.
She even manages to stay civil and laugh at Ann Coulter at times when my first urge would be to kick kick her.
Although if they had to keep the whole left/right thing going they could probably do better with Susan Estrich up against Fred Barnes. Barnes is normally annoying but he'd have good chemistry with her. In other words, he's another one who's not a blowhard and knows how to give in on a point where he should give in.
Maybe the "Right-Left debate" sounds tiring because, like you said, Hannity is a bloviating idiot. The show needs a new cast of characters. There isn't anything wrong with the premise.
Estrich has improved some over the years but still comes from a very eastern liberal bias. She doesn't run for office so I don't criticize her as I might do others. As for working for Schwarzenegger, lets face it he is a Kennedy democrat that exploited the weakness of an incompetent Gray Davis. The only thing that makes Arnold republican is a certain economic point of view. His charisma carries his politics far. Politically Arnold wants to charm them all, whatever party. The question is will it last.
I agree with you about Hannity being a blowhard, but if you put those other two together on the same show, you'll need to add some rocks and a bag of hammers to raise the collective Show IQ level.
Come one, Dean. Donna Brazile? You're claiming that the woman who said of Republicans, "They have no love and no joy. They'd rather take pictures with black children than feed them" is a person who doesn't stoop to ad hominem attacks? Brazile has a history as one of the biggest race-baiters. I'd take a partisan hack from the Dem side before I'd take an on-the-record racist.
I like Hannity. He's a blowhard but, to mangle a quote, he's my kind of blowhard. I think it's refreshing to see a conservative blowhard on the TV once in a while.
Hannity is sexy. Case closed.
I had thought of Hannity and Coulter as a joke. But Hannity and Kusch would be _much_ better, _not_ as a joke. I had thought that Hannity would appeal to a man's man, and so it is. And, for me: Camille and Condi. _I_ love _that_ idea! Eleanor Clift is very sexy to me, too, even though I don't like her views.
Tammy Bruce is sexy, too, and I agree with most of her views. Pro-gun and Lesbian.
