Was Iran Manipulating U.S. Policymakers To Attack Iraq?
Some officials seem to believe that Iran was pulling the strings behind the scenes to get the U.S. to go to war with Iraq. Key players in this alleged saga include U.S. officials, shadowy Iranian officials, and the supposed front man doing the Iranians bidding, Ahmad Chalabi. A strange saga...but troubling if it's true...
The Iranian mullahs now find their hand nearly played out. With a Shi'a moderate as head of the provisional government and al-Sadr marginalized, the new Iraq wil not be the one they had in mind. Any acts of war against a sovereign Iraq would be an invitation for a response from that new nation's staunchest ally (presuming we remain staunch). I doubt that they could maintain power if the existing internal unrest were augmented by outside force.
