Singapore's reason for banning chewing gum is purely practical. They're rather proud of their spiffy subway system. Unfortunately, given the humidity and temperature of the city-state, any chewing gum stucked on the side of the carriage door will melt, resulting in a rather messy cleaning task.

You're also not allowed to carry durians on the subway--I think that was true in Malaysia, too, though I'm not sure.
