For The Life Of Me....

...I do not understand why Matt Drudge is so popular.

Well, I sort of do. In a way that watching a train wreck is fascinating. I guess it's the skeptic in me: I know he occasionally breaks legitimate stories. But so does the National Enquirer.

Of course, the National Enquirer is popular too, so who am I to say?

I think Drudge is popular because he has links to so many news outlets. I rarely read what he writes, but I use Drudgereport as a starting place to see what's going on.

Yeah, what Beth said. It's a great place to find lots and lots of links to stuff from everywhere.

Me too.

Another reason, and this'll die down as the partisan media continues to lose its grip on the news, is that at one time, he was breaking news that no one else was willing to.

But have you heard his radio show?! Excruciating! If only for the long silences.

I think the analogy to the National Enquirer is about right. Neither makes up the news, but both tend to run with stories before the mainstream press is satisfied that the stories are right. That means you hear the news from Drudge and the Enquirer sooner, but it also means that a higher percentage of the news is going to turn out to be wrong.

Oh yeah, and thanks for the Deanalanche.

Drudge is like gossip for newshounds. But I use his page as a portal to other news sites (he has a great links list), so it serves a purpose.

What Michelle said.

What drives me nuts about him is his crass self-promotion. If the NY Times or WaPo mentions him, you can guarantee he'll have a link to it. He's truly the embodiment of the old adage "There's no such thing as bad publicity."

But I keep going back for the juicy tidbits, so what does that say about ME?

(that's merely a rhetorical question)

Ahh... Drudge lost me when he did his "Rush! You're our brain! Our heart and soul! Puh-lease come back!" bit in the interview when Rush went in for pills abuse. Yeesh... Limbaugh was my brain, I'd get a lobotomy...

I like Limbaugh fine, but you can go a bit too far. ;]
