Ouch ... (Rosemary, the QOAE)

Went out with the family this evening. Surprise birthday party for my mom. Had a great time. Got some yummy leftovers for my honey. Tripped in the parking lot on the way out and landed on one knee. I recovered quickly and went on to have a really nice evening at my mom's house. It didn't seem to hurt.

Knee is now swollen and blue. Oh and it really freakin' hurts. Hopefully, before I turn 40, I'll learn to walk.

Ouch.

Rosemary, keep the swelling down by any means necessary. My wife has a similar experience several months ago. A swollen knee will keep swelling if hurt due to the way the joint moves. Hope you get better soon.

Funny thing is, she won't see a doctor.

She's like that.

Use ice packs, cold, wet, cloths, anything to keep the swelling down, Also take asprin to reduce the chance of blood clots!

As my mother told me when I was very young,"Pain hurts.".

I can't use aspirin or any anti-inflammatory. I am using ice.

A belated Happy Birthday to your Mom! I agree with S-Train to get that swelling down and keep an eye on it as you surely know.

What a day. My grandson calls me and tells me his knee is swollen, red and hot. "JaJa,(he was the lil' grandchild that started my grandma name & I am so proud of it...JaJa, what a nice name).
JaJa, I think a spider bit me and my leg is starting to get stiff and it hurts and my Dad said, Just bite the bullet Justin you will be fine."

From the moment he said a spider bite to me I was already on the net looking up what to do for him! I am so thankful for this great new highway of the internet and my high speed cable! He will be fine if he does what I told him to do & thank heavens for Enterprise Rent A Car, the $9.99 dollar a day rent on the weekend. So I have a nice car to go get him if I need to have the doctor check him out.

I come to Dean's World and my pretty lil' lady that is just in her 30's is wondering if she will learn to walk in her 40's. My, my, my pretty young Rose, I fell down in my 40's and now that I am a georgeous, sexy 50, I have still fallen down on my hinny! I am a blonde with blue eyes like you...aahh, Mrs. Rosebud you'll be fine and your sweetie will be there to always pick you up even if he is not right by your side when you do fall. You two have a great love for one another and boy howdy does Dean let us all know... You are His Lady and the love of his Life, well, don't ever forget his Mom was the first. I bet the Moms out there will agree) & You will be telling that to your son and grandsons someday.
Take care honey, we all love you!

Rosemary, I'm of the school that avoids doctors unless a limb is hanging off by a single tendon, too--but don't mess with your joints, okay? Besides, they may have happy pills that you're not allergic to or don't react with other medication.

Posted by Sean Kinsell on April 18, 2004 at 1:59 AM

Uuhh, I am kinda full of myself tonight. I am on "Happy Pills" with both of my hands in braces. Sean is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! You take care of YOUR JOINTS and I too WILL not go to a doctor unless my legs or hands are falling off! You go get an X-RAY tomorrow if you still have pain, your joints are precious and you don't want to end up like me with...bunch of nonsense, O.K? Do give us an update. I am waiting to hear from my grandson tommorrow on his swollen knee from the spider bite. Update us, We Care.

"Be good to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone."

Disclaimer: I am a former USAF medic.

Most likely, Rosemary has a bone bruise of the patella (kneecap) or tibia (shin bone) and/or the periosteum of same. These heal up fairly quickly, like any other bruise.

Less likely, though not outside the realm of possibility, is a hairline or compression fracture of these same bones. These will require splinting & casting to immobilize, and x-rays to confirm. Needless to say, this takes a long time to heal.

Rose, when you landed, did you feel a shock go straight into the bone? I had a compression fracture of my left ulna a while back when I stuck my arm out to cushion a fall, and I felt a shock go straight into the bone. A couple of hours later, I couldn't move the arm at all, and x-rays confirmed the compression fracture.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR KNEES, use ice,not more that 15-30 minutes at a time, for the first 24 hours (which have apparently already passed). I really would suggest you see a physician in case of a tear or a fracture. If it isn't handled at first, it will not go away easily but come back time and time again. Believe me you are hearing from someone who knows. At my last visit my rheumatologist told me that even though I am banned from taking anti inflamatories of the perscription and over the counter variety, if something as you described happened two ibuprofen at night would not cause any bleeding or anemia. I'm just passing along, not prescribing. My best to you in overcoming this, and as a "I can do anything type" in my 30's I recognize at age 67 I should have taken better care of myself.

Rose, when you landed, did you feel a shock go straight into the bone?

No. It stung a bit. It seemed fine at the time. I went on to play frisbee after. About 2 hours later, it started to throb. When I go home it was really hurting. I elevated my knee and iced it. 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off for two hours. I immobilized and elevated it, took a couple tylenol #3's and went to sleep.

This morning it's just a bit stiff but the pain is light and swelling is almost gone.

Ruth,

I have a bleeding ulcer that is being repaired by meds, so no anti-inflammatories for me.

FORGET ICE! You need a bag of frozen peas (or maybe corn). Its still cold and much less messy. Just thaws instead of melting. Plus, it molds much better around the injured area than a bag of ice.

And, I hope you feel loved that I actually figured out how to use bold just for this comment :)

Lucy,

I actually used corn!

Rosemary I hope you will take better care of your own health. I wrote earlier that I too would not go to the doctor unless things were really bad. You have had a few problems with you esophagas, your asthma, your teeth and now you tell us you are caring for a bleeding ulcer. I too had many different health problems and having a total hysterectomy at just 25 in the mid 70's was terribly rough losing my female hormone and going on Premarin for what was thought to help with bone loss. It did not work and three blood clots later, they were taken from me. I still lost bone mass and bone tissues still depleated. It maybe the hormone caused many of the problems and maybe it did not as I do have an autoimmune problem now.

You also had that major surgeory for the weight loss that may or may not have caused the anemia you told us about and your thyroid. Please find ways to meditate and I hope you will continue your pilates as you also suffer the TMJ. My dear friend and author suffered the TMJ for years and was in so much pain. You may not be able to go full force on the pilates like you did a few months ago with nursing your bleeding ulcer. You inspired others to try pilates and one lady was really anxious to try pilates because of you. Maybe now that spring is here you can take long walks while Jacob is in school and find the beauty of nature to give you fresh air for your asthma. I hope you have air cleaners in your home. I have two and they have been great. Mine are made by Oreck and I love QVC so I got both of them on easy pay and I see they are on easy pay again. With your kittens and dogs this would be a great investment and I am so glad you all quit smoking.

God Bless you Rosemary and do think about this ole' gals advice. We all love you and hate to hear you have these different health problems at only what, 30? Just kidding, you told us your age and your birthday is just a few days away. I gave you a web site not long ago called the Christopher's. The site is absolutely enlightning and many great stars like Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Steven Spilberg, the late Mr. Rogers. Jacob would love some of the childrens DVD's as they offer childrens classics like Charles Dickens and Tolstoy. They are darling films and I bet Dean would sit with you and Jacob to watch these. I love their, Three
Minute A Day books. Just $6.00 and the DVD's are real cheap as well.

God Bless you and may your days ahead bring you peace. that address is: christophers.org

Oh, I sent you a subscription for a magazine with stories of hope. It was mailed they told me and maybe you did not get it, not sure you did not say.

Posted by Janelle on April 18, 2004 at 7:14 PM

You all take care. I will be away from my laptop for awhile. I will Wish You a Happy Birthday now. Hope you got the little magazine filled with good advice and stories of hope. It is not a religious magazine but will help.

I've been hoping that I've just been experiencing a very awkward growing stage for years now, though I haven't really grown at all in a couple of years. But I guess since I'm about to turn twenty and I still trip over my own two feet, and given Rosemary's recent little spill, I may have to face up to the fact that I'm always going to be a clutz.

Rosemary:

Ouch! I'm glad your knee is feeling better. I know how it is with the doctor— for years I've steadfastly refused to let myself be turned into a cash cow for doctors, unless I'm in imminent danger of shuffling off this mortal coil.

Still, joints have a way of coming back to bite you. (Am I mixing metaphors, or what?!) When I was 15, I was out running with my dog. She stopped cold in front of me with no warning, I went flying, and twisted my left ankle as I hit the ground. Somehow, I managed to limp home: small miracle, as I was virtually unable to stand on that foot for almost a week. I walked with a limp for three months (accident happened just after school let out in June). And no, I never went to see a doctor for it.

Didn't think much more of it until I got past forty. Now, in recent years, that ankle is sometimes very painful. Especially when I first wake up in the morning. There are times when it's all I can do to walk without a slight limp. And you can forget getting that ankle to do anything that involves any complexity or finesse.

Also, it's finally dawned on me in recent years why, ever since my late teens, the shoelace on my left shoe has always had a way of untying itself spontaneously as I walk, as if by telekinesis.

Like I say, joints have a way of coming back to bite you.
