Camel Spiders

Ever heard of the dread camel spider? Apparently they're scaring the bejeezus out of some of our troops over in the sandbox. Although they're quite harmless, they're sure scary-looking.

Funny thing is, most of the accounts I've read say they're about as big as a human hand, but that's bigger than it sounds if you consider that that doesn't really count the legs. My buddy Ed Wagner sent me a camel spider photo and I gotta say, I'm not normally a fraidy cat but even knowing they're harmless, I'd probably jump about 8 feet if I encountered one of those unexpectedly.

Then again, I might also keep one for a pet. I'm odd that way.

Note that if you look at that picture carefully, it's about life-sized. You can see the sleeve cuff and part of the hand of the soldier (marine?) holding them up to the camera.

By the way, I did a bit of digging and it looks like this particular beastie is what's known as a solifugid, which is a form of arachnid but not technically a spider.

Oh my God. If I found one of those in my house, I'd move. I'd probably leave town, too.

Well, you'd figure they've all got M-16's, so they shouldn't be that big a problem....

Spooky, spooky and trying to calm down and get myself together! Ha, ha, ha, Oh my...trying to catch my breath and put my little table back together!

Right at the exact moment I looked at the picture of the camel spider, I mean the EXACT moment while leaning forward & creeping out at that horrible picture of that gigantic spider,...My cat, Mr. Pips that sits at the top of my recliner moved his golden tan tail right across my shoulder! HOLY SHIT!...I JUMPED OUT OF MY LAZY BOY RECLINER FASTER THAN A SPEEDING BULLET AND SCREAMED MY BLOODY HEAD OFF!!! JESUS, LORD HAVE MERCY! Pant, pant, gasping ...picking my heart off the ground as well as all the papers that were on my little lap top table and what not that flew in the air!!!

I am a single woman and I live alone...MAN, I need a double shot of JACK! Shit, excuse me. The darn cats tail swishing over me! Any minute now I expect the neighbors to call the police!

Damn, now I will be up all night and there ain't any liquor stores open!

DANG YOU DEAN! It's just a bit after 3 am here and was tossing and turning in bed so came to read some of your writings. DAD BLASTED, my goodness DEAN, I can only imagine how many other of us ladies will react to that DAMN SPIDER and it is just a picture.

Damn, Dean! Good thing I didn't see this until morning, or I would have had nightmares all night long.
Those are just gross and icky and give me shivers down my spine. I had no idea there was such a creature. ick yuck

Jesus, I'd put two rounds into that thing just to be safe.

1. The pic is of soldiers, not marines, holding the CS. The easiest way to tell, marines have a crossed rifle on the enlisted rank.
2. I was told that the Camel Spider is a blood sucker and that in the previous Gulf War, the CS ate a soldiers nose while he slept. I don't know how true that is [I was also told that Baghdad would be ground zero for a suicidal dictator].

Posted by Joshua on April 08, 2004 at 7:00 AM

Joshua: As the article I linked to said, these critters are not bloodsuckers, have no venom, and are quite harmless to humans. They eat crickets and such, mostly. Tales of them crawling on GI faces, eating camel stomachs, etc. are false. Just as false as whatever fool told you that bit about ground zero.

If the article I linked isn't enough you can also check the Straight Dope.

Normally I don't get the heebie-jeebies, but in this case I'll make an exception.

Bill: Just two rounds? I think I'd be chucking grenades. Where's Steve Irwin when you need him?

Mind boggles. Room spinning. I need a gun. Right now. Just in case.

Maybe this is why there's war in the MiddleEast. I'm sure everyone over there is jumpy, and has been for generations.

I'm too scared to even open the pictures.

I need help.

Posted by red on April 08, 2004 at 10:53 AM

Joshua isn't entirely correct:
enlisted ranks

With this picture, without being able to see the symbol inside the stripes clearly, it's impossible to determine whether it is Army or Marines from the insignia.

However, the Marines adopted the digitized camo pattern for both Desert and Woodland back in January of 2002. I'm going to guess that everyone in the Marines has the new Marine Corps desert uniforms by now, so the camo pattern would then indicate it is, in fact, a soldier.

Air Force servicemembers wear the same 3-color desert pattern as the Army, but the rank insignia is worn differently.

Posted by Sgt. Mom on April 08, 2004 at 12:25 PM

The spider is sitting on the lens of the camera, which is why it looks huge. I've had to deal with camel spiders for over 20 years, in Iraq, Saudi, Kuwait, Syria. They can bite, they're not poisonous--though the bites can become infected easily--and they jump like SOBs. But they're hardly worth getting your knickers in a twist...

Posted by Juke on April 08, 2004 at 12:35 PM

Juke's got it. I would add a couple of other points, based on my experience with photography of models:

1. The camera is one that allows manual override of the focus.

2. The photographer has the focal length at f/22 or higher -- and may have a magnifying filter on the lens.

The trick is to get the small object close to the lens, focus on the small object, and rack the focal length as high as you can. A high f/ number means that you are focused over a long distance -- in this case about 3 feet. But you have problems doing this with an autofocus camera.

The picture shows a U.S. Army First Sergeant. The army insignia for that rank is very similar for the USMC First Sergeant rank, but the Marines don't wear the U.S. flag patch on their uniforms. The Marines do wear spiffy digitized camo, but they are also authorized (and do wear) the same pattern as the Army and Air Force as well. I'm stationed near Baghdad, and I have yet to see any of these creatures, but it's still fairly cool here. Frankly, we concern ourselves more about other threats than a few large non-venomous spiders, but that's just me.

Posted by John B. on April 08, 2004 at 10:20 PM

Hi Dean! I've never visited yer site before, but I fell upon it while I was researching this exact thing. I received this email at work with the picture of the mating "arthropods" and about fell out of my seat! I had the heebie jeebies so bad, I just knew I had to find out about these nasty lil guys. So I hopped on line to find out they are totally harmless, disgusting to look at, but again, harmless. Funny how that works out, eh? Either way, Camel Spiders have no interest in eating people or camels, they prefer scorpions, and lizards, bugs, and sometimes small birds, when they can catch them, and I'm not seein' a lot about them jumping, but they can and do run as fast as 10 mph. (a little freaky in itself) They prefer shadows, and are nocturnal. It is also assumed that they use hair for nesting, which would explain why they may pester the soldiers in the night. I'm certain, even knowing this, I'd piss myself if one crawled on me! Thanks Dean! Great site, and have a great day!

John B.,

If I ever go into combat (doubtful, the Army would take me, at my age {g}), I want to go with someone like you, because you have got to be one of the coolest, most cold-blooded SOBs I've ever seen!

I'm over here yelling "CHRIST, get that thing away from me!," and you're analyzing military fashion styles. {VBG}

Damn, that thing was ugly!

My Uncle sent me that same picture today from Iraq. I nearly fell on the floor when I saw this beast. I believe my Uncle's comment was this, "Another reason Bayonet drill is still important !! "

Posted by Amiee on April 08, 2004 at 11:25 PM

The photo of interest is actually TWO camel spiders hooked together. I didn't see anybody bring that up.

When I was a kid in Kansas, we used to have camel crickets in our basement...they are bigger than the normal black crickets but very, very scary and odd looking. I've never seen them where I live now tho, but here we have house centipede, and they are hella fast and scare the shit outta me even tho they are harmless and actually eat all the other bugs in your house.

Enlisted ranks are different for all of our Armed Forces. The rank of 1st Sgt is very similar between the USMC and the USA both have 3 stripes up and 3 stripes down with a diamond in the center. Marines use metal chevrons on cammies Soldiers use a cloth type that are sewn on the collar. Looking closely at this picture I see that the chevrons are cloth and not metal. I also agree with Nathan that these are soldiers because of what he stated about the cammie pattern. On the spiders this is a spoof in that Camel Spiders do no get as big as this picture suggests. http://home.global.co.za/~quagga/solpugid.htm

Posted by Rick on April 09, 2004 at 2:42 AM

Actually the camel spider latches on to the belly of a camel and injects a venom that numbs the camel and they dont know they are there until their intestines fall out on the ground. You guys should research a little more before actually saying that they are harmless creatures because they are not. If they eat camels, what else do they eat?

Posted by Jennifer on April 09, 2004 at 4:05 AM

Okay...

1) That IS an army uniform
2) Camel spiders are NOT poisonous, they do NOT have venom, and they do not usually bother humans aside from hiding in (or attacking) their shadows.
3) That IS the actual size of them - the camera itself has not altered the picture. In fact, they can grow from an adult size of three inches long to one foot long - and that's the body size. And yes, they are mating in the picture.
4) They do bite. It hurts. You will not die from it, but you will need medical attention to prevent infection (which you can die from).
5) Camel Spiders love the shadows - THAT is why military personnel have been finding them in their tents - during the day in the desert, it's the only shady place to be.
6) They normally do only eat lizards, spiders, crickets and whatknot, but they ALSO latch onto camel stomachs (hence their name) and eat. Camel intestines do not fall out, but the CS's do get a nice meal.

I did a repoort on these things they're harmless and dont eat anything but other insects and junk. they dont eat camels insides and wouldn't eat a soldiers nose.

Posted by Danielle on April 09, 2004 at 11:16 AM

I am currently serving in the desert and the uniform is an Army soldier. Marines and the Army ranks are very similar (both cloth with the exception of officers) and we all wear ( I am AF) the same DCU (uniform). The way you can tell it is Army is from the flag on the shoulder. Only Army wears the US flag. Also very , very few Marines are wearing the digitized DCU uniforms in fact here in Afghanistan none of them are.

Oh and I have seen those damn things first hand
(not that big.. but almost) but I can believe that they are capable of getting that big. Hell we have "average" humans and overweight ones! You should see the freakin' ants here they are about the size of a quarter!

Posted by Yvettelk on April 09, 2004 at 11:36 AM

just to let you know those spiders were fighting because we get many deployments from my base here in japan and all of my friends say that these spiders are caught by gi's. then they challenge each others prize "pets" in matches. The trick is to not feed it much for a few days and then nothing 2-3 days before the match. these spiders like to over eat so when it sees a potential meal it will attack. we can be creative when there is nothing else to do. what is more manly than an insect that can beat up another mans spider.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!?!? I recently retired from the Army and was in Desert Shield, Desert Storm and the Liberation of Kuwait. I stumbled upon this page and can't beleave some of your comments.
1. That is the actual size !
2. They WILL chase you..Trust me I know, and it wasn't in my shadow. or running for my shadow. It was chaseing ME.
3. Yes, we would fight them against scorpions, they would win every time. You can hear them crunch as they eat the scorpions.
4. The rank is CLEARLY Army 1SG rank!!If you don't know what your talking about then please keep your yap shut.
5. I don't have many fears but the CS is CLEARLY one I will not forget....Harmless??There mouth is huge and it CRUNCHES scorpions??Sound HARMLESS to you?
6. They DO jump, a couple of feet if they want to, seenimes
7. Nobody I know nor myself had been bitten by one..but I still don't like them..
8. You can NOT cap off rounds into a spider!!All ammnition is accounted for for ROW (Rules Of Engagement) dictate when you can shoot. You can NOT cap off whenever you please and you better have a Damb good reason.

Ok, sorry. Sometimes I get a little carried away but it really ticks me off when people talk about something they know NOTHING about like they are an expert.I am all for free speech and public opinion.

MY BUDDY AT WORK SHOWED ME THAT PHOTO THAT HE RECEIVED FROM A FRIEND AND THEN I DID A SEARCH AND FOUND "DEAN'S" WEB PAGE. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS A JOKE...NO LONGER. WOW MOTHER NATURE SURE HAS A SENCE OF HUMOR! V/R/ DEAN

I got this email yesterday and have since been trying to research it. I have yet to find a picture of this spider anywhere else. NO kind of documentation whatsoever. The only ones I can find are these little things, not this monstrosity. I dont know what to believe. Although it is conceivable that the camera may be the reason why it looks so huge, but then why dont the soldiers??? Who knows but when I saw it every strand of hair on my arms and neck stood up. And I'm not even scared of spiders!

I just have 1 question. If that thing really does exist, shouldnt one be in the Smithsonian? I mean damn they have giant roaches there, why not a spider the size of my 3 year old.!!!!!

Dean, do you mean the links in your original message at the top of this page?

Posted by Damy on April 09, 2004 at 2:11 PM

Yes, I linked two articles as well as the photo. You can also read the Straight Dope I linked in an earlier comment above.

They're quite real.

Posted by Dean Esmay on April 09, 2004 at 2:24 PM

I think the people are right that the size is a little deceiving. You look at it for the first time and you think they're almost as big as your legs. If you look carefully though you can see that they're being held up with pliers and the hand is right next to them. In reality I think these particular creatures aren't that much larger than a human hand.

Posted by johnny on April 09, 2004 at 3:03 PM

haha all i know i hate spiders either way it can be an inch or a foot ill F*CKING kill it no matter what screw the ammunition policy i think its a damn good reason to shoot a giant spider exspecially if it is chaseing you or in my tent. and also they get mad at you for the ammo then maybe they will send me home for not paying attention to the rules but either way that spider would be gonzo

Posted by curt on April 09, 2004 at 3:38 PM

Johnny's right - the perspective on that picture makes it look like the spiders are as big as your legs, but they definitely aren't.

Posted by WinkyBoy on April 09, 2004 at 3:45 PM

Just think! Thousands of years ago some schmuck walking around looked at that god forsaken land with those big ugly things and said "Yeah, this looks like a good place to live!" And there they are still hmmmmmmm. Maybe that's why the people wear those towels on their heads over there. The spiders have eaten away their scalps and it's all that's holding what little they have left of their brains in their heads!!

Posted by chaos on April 09, 2004 at 8:50 PM

Wankers! Just run a search on Google - the results are more than you'll ever need to know: "Results 11 - 20 of about 87,100 for camel spider. (0.10 seconds)".

Yeh, I still wouldn't argue with one of 'em. I'm scary that way.

Just got back from Iraq, myself... Funny CS story...

It was about 10pm, just got out of our "field shower" walking across the desert in my shorts and shower shoes (flip-flops). Start chatting with a few bud's while nervously moving the flashlight around my feet. I'd never seen one either until this night, but the pic's and war stories were enough to keep me on edge (surely you understand).

There he was!!! moving ever so quickly, just a few feet away. We all start screaming like schoolgirls and trying to keep our lights on this moving target that is perfectly camofluaged to the desert floor. We were either too close for comfort or too far away to keep him in sight. Do I run and hide? Do I "dispose" of this menace? It was like a horror movie, but funnier. In a fit of passionate rage I lung forward and stomp the fella into the ground. Whew! Now anyone who's been there knows the ground isn't sand, it's extremely fine dirt. Like talcom powder. I'm wearing flip-flops and I just stomped on a spider, the likes I'd never known... A cloud of dust forms up to my knee and all below disappears. That's when the cold reality of fear came upon me and I jogged (come on, folks! I'm trying to keep my dignity here) back to my tent and put my boots back on.

...never did know if I got him!

He was about the same size as my shower shoe, that's a size 14, incase the ladies are wondering ;).

ROTLMAO! You go, Joe! When in doubt, attack!!

I DON'T CARE! I DON'T CARE! I DON'T CARE!!!

These puppies are way too freaking ugly, even at six inches across!

Oh, by the way, TOW_Lord? You can just rock me to sleep tonight, buddy. "Crunching scorpions!!!," that's the last thing I need to hear right now... (mumble, grumble, mumble)

I'm pretty sure this is specific to the unit but it is nice to hear that some trust is placed in soldiers judgment. Thanks for your reply chief and good luck to you and your carear. This is in remark to posting by JOHN B on the 8th at 10:20pm.

John remarked how he is station close to Bagdad and that frankly they have bigger concerns than to worry about a spider.

Well, JOHN B., the article was about the spider! We all know what you guys are there for. We all know about the concerns and the dangers. We all know about how tuff it is for all. AND WE ALL GREATLY APPRECIATE ALL YOU GUYS ARE GIVING UP.

But, try to understand the STRESS the families back here have. The spider story has people taking a break from the worries and enjoying some refreshing change of subject, other than the war.

Just because you haven't seen any, you seem to want to harp on the fact that people are over reacting. John, families back here are STRESSED OUT and it is just a release. Don't take that away from the families.

Also, you mention about it being cool still, funny the weather reports I been getting show it being 120-130 degrees all day. So, what you meant to say is still cool at night. And guess what, the spiders like it cool and hunt at night. So the chances of you seeing one are slim anyway.

I can't thank all of you enough for your dedication and service. But please realize your families are really stressed out a lot and things like the spider story are a relief!

Thanks to all of you, And you guys remember, your families need stress relief also. This spider story gave that!

....and further more John B. IF you want to remark on how you have bigger concerns than the spider. I ask you politely, "Don't you have bigger concerns and threats than being on the internet, reading these spider stories?" but hey John, that's just me! No disrespect intended, just sometimes it's better to think, before you speak or write! I know it's tough for everyone, please just let the families release there stress the best way they can. Thanks for everything you and all the soldiers have given.

i saw something about the CS its can run up to 25 mph but man that things huge.

Posted by Blaster-Worm on April 13, 2004 at 6:01 PM

Way to go Bro - but, not everyone is laid back enough to see the entertainment value in all this.

Now, my take on the picture - if you look at the upper right corner you can see the folds of the palm on the hand that is holding the pliers that are hold the spiders.

Given that there are 2 spiders (one forward and one backward, both heads up) Compare just one body with the sleeve opening, the palm, and the plier tips - you can see that these spiders are probably 5 inches long. That's what I am seeing!

The impression that these are foot long spiders is, most likely, a visual perception trick caused by the spiders legs, objects in the distance and the fact that there are two connected.

As for the myths and truthes about them - I don't know - need more info. But, I'd rather read about them than find out first hand. I have enjoyed the CS encounter stories though.

And to all those GI's - whether you are killing these spiders, fighting them against each other or running like hell from them - I THANK YOU for the job you're doing! Stay safe!!

Posted by Barry on April 13, 2004 at 6:15 PM

Scary yes, large yes, painfull if they bite, but still mostly harmless. They have no venom and usually eat scorpions/crickets/etc. The really funny thing is that they like the shade so much that they will follow a person around just to be able to be in the person's shadow, if the person runs away, they follow the shadow, giving the illusion that they are chasing the person.

Posted by jwoulf on April 13, 2004 at 8:37 PM

Yes, they are the ugliest and nastiest creatures on our planet! I don't really care if they are venomless! I just hate thinking about our troops in all branches having to deal with them. My husband was deployed to Turkey- before fighting broke out- and he came home months later telling stories about the biggest and nastiest spiders he had ever seen. They lived in the grass there and were everywhere. He said you went to the showers in groups and walked everywhere at night in groups to ensure you didn't run into them. If one had been stepped on it was like an oil slick where it had been. They can and do get very large. I have had bad dreams about these ugly things.
To our military men and women- stay safe and come home to all of us soon!
Remember your operators that put your calls through when you call home! They pray for you and can't wait to hear you are coming home! God bless america and our fighting force!

I spent 6 years on the Afghan Border where you actually get these guys too. In the North West Frontier, in local dialects, they are known as 'Bichoo'. There is a lot of myth surrounding these spiders from eating camel stomachs to anaesthasising prey and munching on flesh. I have not ever heard of this but have actually seen someone bitten/stung by a Camel Spider. It is very painful and tends to be quite venomous. The poor guy who was stung had to be taken to hospital for the antitoxin.
In the whole six years, I was out there, I only ever came across them eight or nine times... but damn! They run fast... The fastest spider I have ever seen. They are quite shy and tend to stay away from industrialised areas... sticking to hot, arid areas. They aren't pretty, they are very large and scary, very fast and jump.

To regurgitate lots of the facts already on here and to refute some of the falsehoods folks love to believe.

-To get an idea of the size. The body s around the size of your fist. Then add 1-2 inches for leg span. Whoever said they are about 5 inches is about right.

- They have a speed of around 10 mph. They're extremely fast predators. Most species are nocturnal, and a number are burrowers.

- Someone mentioned they look like a sun spider. That's because they are close to the same (order solifugae), though the species may be different.

Again, as Dean mentioned..check out the straight dope.

The Spider....VERY REAL! They just look big in picture. Depth of perception just makes them look 6" long when actually they are 2 to 3" in body length with a leg length of up to 7".

All the above who don't know what their talking about should know what a 3 - 7" weenie looks like!!

If you have not seen one up close and personnal, don't quote here! you will just make yourself look more studid than you already are!!

Hmmm. Throw 'em on a hot fire and roast them a little bit. Top it off with a good BBQ sauce. Yumm. Tastes like Chicken!

I found your site after my favorite(?) sister sent me the pic.... I kinda screamed at my desk, scared my co-worker, and again when I sent HER the pic... ha ha I can be nasty... anyway I am rambling again... I was curious as to whether they are truely as large as the picture indicated, and of course if it was real, obviously the picture is a little bit tricked. But to make a long story short I love your site, I am sending it to my son, he's kind of morbid too. Thanks again, your site makes it look as though I am REALLY working hard!

Okay, I have heard both stories. And with my common sense I say that around the world wherever they exist, they may be diffrent sizes...such as the so called "myth" of the sixty foot anaconda...I bet even bigger spiders than the camel spider exist, or bigger camel spiders than 6 or 7 feet.

Why havn't we seen these on the Discovery channel or Animal planet..or in an insect museum...I beleive NO-ONE knows much about the Camel spider. They are a mystery. Unless Straight Dope is kept up by scientists, they don't know shit. We need a real scientist to study every aspect of this creature. They might have a venom we never seen before, thats why there are claims that they don't have venom. Earth is still a big mystery and we havn't even scratched the preverbial surface. Creatures evolve people, movies aren't that far off from the truth, with giant sea creatures in the abyss like Deep Sea..or Anaconda..etc etc.

My opinion is most of you who post here are bull shit artists who don't know the truth, or ever been to Iraq or wherever and just claim they have to look important.

My teacher told me a story that his brother told him, whom is currently near the front line, about a camel spider burrowing into a sleeping GI's back. And that the hole was huge and the spider was around a foot long. I think most of this is exageration...but you never know.
