Anniversary In The Latin Worker's Paradise

As Val Prieto notes, today is an important anniversary in the Worker's Paradise: one year ago today, the Castro government rounded up over 75 independent journalists, physicians, and librarians for criticizing the government.

Follow the link, Val's got more info you should read.

My own comment? Just remember: Wherever there is a jackboot stepping on a human face, there'll be a well-healed, comfortable, spoiled-brat Westerner there to remind us that the face enjoys free health care and a high rate of literacy*--and that "international law" and "principles" forbid us from doing anything about it besides giving dictators whatever they ask for and giving more money to the United Nations.

Who's line is that, Dean? I like it!

I believe that's John Derbyshire on National Review Online.

Amen, amen. My last encounter with that was an ex-roomate's girlfriend, who threw the universal healthcare factoid up in the air. I told her that it was a good thing, that way after Castro tortures you you won't have to pay for the hospital stay. Idiota.

It wasn't Derbyshire. I'm certain of that.

I've noticed the librarians especially, since I work in a library and all (though I don't have an MLS, so I'm not a Real Librarian (TM)). The weirdest thing about this business is that I have yet to meet or work with a degreed librarian who wasn't a fervent socialist lackey. I don't know what it is about that MLS, but every recipient seems to get a brain drain upon receiving it. I had one of my supervisors, a sweet lady usually, tell me (seriously) that she would feel safer in Castro's Cuba than Bush's America. I goggled a bit and asked her about their treatment of librarians, and I swear she said "Well, we have differences of opinion on that." It's hard to argue with unyielding idiocy.

Meanwhile, upstairs they have leaflets all over the place urging patrons to call up the govt. and gripe about the freedom-destroying Patriot Act. I shove the things out of sight whenever I get a chance, but, as Calvin would say, the irony of this is just sickening.

This just seems to be a staple of the far left going back to Lenin and Stalin. Fortunately, most people recognize that these socialist are fools adn do not take them seriously.

Dean

Unfortunately, the political prisoners in Cuba don't have much support in the media or the world in general. I posted a letter from one of these men where he tells how they daily torture him by spreading some powdered chemical on him and in his cell. I posted letters from more than one prisoner stating how they are beaten and tortured and subjected to subhuman treatment. Guess what? Not a single comment, not a single trackback, not a single email from anyone. This seems to be the status quo with Cuba. Nobody really gives a shit as long as there more important news items like Michael Jackson's trial and Janet's boob on television or Kerry's flip-flops.

If I weren't so disappointed Id be angry.

Sonetka,

I agree with you. Tha stance of these librarians is sickening. Here they are complaining about the minor intrusions of the Patriot Act, while condoning the violation of human rights of Cuban librarians with their silence.

They are all hypocrites.

Well Dean, here's someone you may recognize giving credit to Derbyshire for the quote:

It is Derbyshire's. I remember reading it on The Corner several months ago.

Did Val see Oliver Willis' latest on Castro and how we should be nicer?

Among hispanic voters, no constituency has tilted more in the GOP's favor than Cuban-Americans. I lived in South Florida for 10 years, and the single-minded focus of that group on Fidel Castro often crosses the line into all sorts of craziness and irrationality (Elian, anyone?). I don't expect Cuban Americans to turn out in droves for John Kerry, and think not voting at all is more likely to be the way for them to protest.

I happen to believe that President Clinton and Janet Reno bent over backwards for the Gonzalez family in the whole Elian situation, and even though he went back to Castro's regime - the child belonged with his father. It was pretty damn obvious his family here was insane. From a bigger POV, I don't think our current Cuba policy is doing much to bring democracy to the island nation and as old as he is, Fidel doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon. My opinion is that if we become more open with the Cuban people, rather than letting a vocally extreme exile community dictate our entire policy, we can do much more to help change the regime there.

All we are saaaaaaaaying, is give appeasement a chance!

Aaron,

Yeah, poor Elian is now reunited with his father. Unfortunately, they dont get to see each other much as when Elian isnt out on the fields doing his "agricultural" duties, he's at the right hand of the bearded master for all the world to see. Such crazies we are here in Miami.

Ara, in this case I like "well-healed" better even if it doesn't mean what Dean intended.
