Okay, someone explain this to me.
Anyone who knows me knows that my favorite musical instrument is the guitar. Electrified or not, I love that instrument. I play it a little, but my preference is just to listen to someone else who can play the hell out of it.
Last Friday, my favorite evil poetry-loving wench observed the following:
It is my firm belief that punk rock started as one generation's way of saying "hey guys, enough with the fourteen minute guitar solos already."She is probably correct.
So how is it that I love both Led Zeppelin and The Clash? The B-52s and the Allman Brothers? Les Paul and Stevie Ray Vaughan? Chuck Berry and Van Halen? Buddy Holly and Santana?
I do know this much: if you asked me whether I liked Soundgarden more than Violent Femmes, I suspect my brain would lock up.
I'm not quite sure what ties it all together, but I do know one thing: Outtathaway is now the Unofficial Dean's World Theme Song.
Just in case you were curious.
I like both Led Zepplin and the Clash as well, but that doesn't stop me from being terribly annoyed at the fact that I can turn off my radio when "Freebird" comes on, go away and read the unabridged version of War and Peace, turn it back on and that bloody song will *still* be playing.
Simple. Good music is good music. But at some point, every style becomes a parody of itself. Let's face it. There's a whole world of difference between Led Zeppelin and "ina gada da vida."
And I'm sorry, but I can only take so much santana at one sitting.
And I vote for We like the Moon.
...I can turn off my radio when "Freebird" comes on, go away and read the unabridged version of War and Peace, turn it back on and that bloody song will *still* be playing.
You say that like it's a bad thing!
Just a bit of useless triva, but the title of "Ina Gada Da Vida" came about by the lead singer's drunken attempt to utter the words "In The Garden of Eden".
VH1 should be considered "educational television".
...don't you know that I'll AL-ways luh-huv you?
(That's in my listing of Worst Songs Ever.)
I believe the anser to your question is best sumed up by Luciano Pavarotti when he said,
"Good Phrasing is good Phrasing"
Bonus points if you know who he was referring to.
Sinatra?
Kurt Cobain?
Jeff Beck?
I don't think it's a generation's way of saying "Enough with the 14 minute guitar solos." I think it's their way of saying "I don't feel like playing a 14 minute guitar solo." Big difference.
Do you think they might have been saying "I can't play a 14 minute guitar solo"?
Sinatra?
I have to admit it Dean, when it comes to music you know your stuff.
(Now if we could just get you up to speed on the rest of the stuff [grin])
Ditto Jeff Beck, also can't not include Steve Hackett @ www.stevehackett.com. Also check out both Beck and Santana on Narada Michael Waldens Garden of love light. Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew...all still active musicians
How is it that I can love both chocolate AND vanilla?
Oh dear, I also happen to like both white AND wheat bread! Damn, rye too!
