Holy Cow, Now That's a Weblog!

Okay, you'll either dig this or you won't. But if you do, you'll dig it a lot.

Pillow Talk is an updated re-vernacularization (i.e. highly modernized, into the vulgate as it were) of Makura no Soshi, the journals of a tenth-century Japanese woman. Dig the hook, too; it's been (slightly) re-imagined into weblog form, although the translation is basically straightforward.

Thanks to David, who aptly describes it thusly: "Good girls go to heaven. Bad girls go everywhere else. Wild women don't worry. Wild women don't get the blues."

I can't stop reading!

By the way, David will also point you to a more complete and traditional translation, along with stuff that hasn't hit the blog yet. Think I'll put this one on my wish list.

::cringes:: Sorry, I guess I'm just a purist; I've always thought the original Sei Shoonagon was one of the most beautiful writers I'd ever read, and this modern version annoys me.

Although I think it would be funny for someone to write a blog as Genji from Genji Monogatari...

Yeah, if you want to get a sense of the tone of the original, read one of Judith Martin's early Miss Manners books. She's mellowed some in her old age, but 20 years ago, she had the same scorn for bad form and high-handed way of universalizing her preferences into standards as Sei Shonagon.
