Vitamin E

So, there's increasing evidence that Vitamin E slows the aging process. I can tell you from personal experience that it has other benefits as well.

You know, I remember a time when physicians regularly claimed that vitamin pills were a scam, that they offered no benefits whatsoever. "All they do is give you expensive urine," is a line some of them liked to use. "You get all the nutrition you need if you just eat a balanced diet" was the other phrase they liked to use. Now, the more time goes on, the more we learn that dietary supplements do, in fact, offer substantial benefits. Some people exaggerate those benefits, but the more time goes on, the more research vindicates those who said all along that taking vitamins (and minerals) was a smart strategy for health.

Yes sir, absolutely right, no bout a doubt it, fer sure for absolute! Vitamins and minerals along with a healthy diet. Even though I have an autoimmune disease I got the official book put out by the Arthritis Foundation on the Guide to Alternative Therapies! It lists the vitamins that are proven to help!

Sooo, the medical establishment is coming on board!

I always wondered why taking vitamin C just produced vitamin C-enriched urine, but putting salt on your celery caused high blood pressure instead of just salty urine.

We gave vitamin E for years as an anti oxidant to prevent diabetics from getting arteriosclerosis. Then they did a study in Finnland and found the people who got vitamin E actually had a much higher rate of heart disease so we stopped doing it. Now we are giving folic acid/high dose vitamin B instead.
One problem in all these studies is that the "health nuts" who tend to use vitamins also exercize and come from a healthy genetic stock...so they live longer due to healthy diet etc. If you give vitamin E to people who eat twinkies and big macs, are 60 lbs overweight, and whose only exercize is hitting the tv remote, it might not work....

Well, yes and no -- I'd say it's just that not having enough vitamin E makes you age faster, not the other way around. And there's no reason you couldn't get it from your diet, if you eat right. If you can't, then sure, supplement with a vitamin... but most vitamins (especially these days) have way too much of all sorts of things.

Also, it's not like taking more and more of any vitamin will produce more and more benefit. There's a certain amount of vitamin your body needs, and afterthat it's just excess. Depending on the vitamin, the excess will either just harmlessly exit, or it could stick around and cuase problems. High levels of Vitamin D, for example, just get deposited in your fat (because they are not water soluable) and can cause all sorts of nasty problems.

Vitamin C is a great vitamin, but taking megadoses of it won't do a thing for you other than make you pee vitamin C. ;) It's true. The myth about vitamin C was started by a great chemist, Linus Pauling, who won multiple Nobel prizes. On the other hand, he was also a greedy jerk, and he made money off of Vitamin C sales, so he made it all up.

Recenly peple have done studies on ecinacea and other crap and discovered they don't so a darn thing, either. ;)

it used to be that vitamin C stopped colds, now it's vitamin E stopping aging. vitamin therapy will never be disproved because the claims keep changing

A very respectable journal (Science or Nature) wrote that we really don't know if fat is bad. To check reliably, you would need an enormously expensive study.
If we're not sure about THAT, I would take new findings in nutrition with a grain of salt.
