Minor Glitch

We were down for a few hours today due to the fact that we ran out of disk space. Movable Type doesn't react well to that, and neither does my hosting provider. It should be fine now.

What happens to Verve when your bandwidth is exceeded?

Posted by dowingba on December 16, 2003 at 4:30 PM

If your bandwidth is exceeded, you get a note telling you to throttle back or upgrade.

If your DISK SPACE is exceeded, the system stops letting you save anything more, and Movable Type goes ape.

I've heard that about MT and diskspace. THat's why on my site I don't print the comments out on the actual permalink pages, I just have a link to the comment script. SQL doesn't take up diskspace. And if I really get tight on space/money, I have developed a technique on MT whereas I can have infinite entries and comments and the diskspace will never get used up. Ever.

(Because I assume that's what happened: you were too close to your limit and then people filled the rest up with comments.)

Ain't it grand?

I should have said "Men :)" Afterall, I've very grateful to the man that keeps my computer happy.

What should scare people is that I used to do tech support for a large software company. They decided to try an experiment where they hired people good at customer service and taught us about computers instead of trying to teach compassion to computer-geeks. Basically, they gave us a quick workshop in Windows and threw us to the wolves. At first, the hardcore geeks were practically apoplectic. Then, they discovered we weren't totally useless. Personally, I specialized in freaked out old people. Most of the computer-geeks could NOT deal with crying old people and refused, on principle, to call the cursor "that pointy thing". I've had worse jobs.

I remember when I was a Movable Type know-nothing (still pretty much am), and Dean swooped in and saved me from BlogSpot. One of his first warnings: Don't ever exceed your disk space! ;-)

Don't ever exceed your disk space!

That's what he told me, too, and it came back just recently when I was trying to upload, repeatedly, unsuccessfully, a small photo.

So I upgraded on vervehosting for the cost of a couple of beers, and bing! back in bizness. I must say verve is an excellent and prompt hosting provider.
