Thing I like about comments vs. e-mail/usenet flamewars: even the most intense one is guaranteed a much shorter shelf life. So some dismal troll might get the last word - on a comment thread that nobody will read. Who cares? When I have to scroll past lots of good red meat on the blog to navigate to a comment thread that I was interested in a couple days ago, it stops being worth it.
Comment threads die out. E-mail/usenet flamewars have to be killed.

I have to confess I am no longer able to read all comment traffic. I do my best though.
