You Know What They Say?
They say that the two things you should never discuss are religion and politics, because no matter what you say or do, someone will wind up offended.
They say a lot of things, don't they?
But do you know what I say?
I say there's not much else worth talking about, is there?
Its why I like discussing the political ramifications of religion....
I prefer the religious ramifications of politics . . .
Silliness aside, one of the more fascinating topics out there is the intersection between government and religion. People get into quite a snit over things like prayer in schools or the Ten Commandments at a courthouse; at the same time, legislatures across the country (including Congress) open their sessions with prayer, and the Supreme Court itself begins with a guy intoning "God save this honorable Court." Go figure.
I thought that rule just applied to introductions and dinner parties, where the ideal to strive for is along the lines of, "Do you believe this weather?" Of course, nowadays bringing up the weather is likely to bring a global warming-obsessed Gaia worshipper leaping out from behind the nearest potted plant.
"I say there's not much else worth talking about, is there?"
Say WHAT? Ain't you never heard of sex or watermelons?
(Punchline to one of the few jokes that's older than I am.)
As long as you keep the two separate, Francis. As long as you keep them separate.
Well, I am a Proud Texan and people usually get fired up over that statement! My movers came yesterday and I fly home next week, you know them south n ers don't like yankees in a U-Haul!
(I don't believe I put that in print)
Hey, Judge Moore is taking his case to the Supreme Court over the Ten Commandments he had outside his courtroom. What ya think about that?
I have a better one to talk about. Since so many people are getting all fired up about taking God out of things. Clinton brought school prayer back. Eisenhower made our State Motto, In God We Trust... so it was put on our currency. What should we do?
A properly educated group of people can sit about discussing politics and religion in a civilised manner....pardon me for a moment, as its my turn to sweep out the cave....
Mark you are absolutely right and it can get sooo ridiculous! Can I be next in line to sweep out the cave? giggle, love that!
Couldn't agree more. That's what I like about this blog. George Bernard Shaw said the same thing. Politics, Religion, and Sex -- and, especially, wherever any two or all of the three intersect. That's all I'm interested in. Well, actually, Beauty, of which Religion and Sex are manifestations.
Sadly I am majoring in Politics and (no joke) minoring in religion. As my Girl Friend likes to point out; if I talk about my studies much at all, I’ll be bound to offend someone…
