The only problem is that every year more laws are passed, more bureaucracy is created, more regulation is enacted, more taxes are collected, and more division is felt. By the very fact that Congress meets and writes law every year, the direction we must go is toward Socialism.
In addition, people come here from impoverished Socialist countries - then they vote to make our system more like the one that they fought to escape. There will be an end to this great country - and it will by by our own doing.
so perhaps to fix it, we can propose the following:
For every new law enacted, 4 old laws must be stricken from the books. Choose wisely and well, set a "budget" for new legislation, and perhaps we will get out of this with our sanity....
*yeah, I know, since when has anyone in government been able to stick to a budget.....
I wrote in newspapers complaining about drugs being sold off my front yard with police doing nothing.
I further embarassed the police, and then proposed civilian oversight of police and the judiciary. Police told me to leave Stafford Springs, Connecticut or else.
I didn't leave and ended up losing my home and going to prison for having tested free speech.
If you type in 'Governor Rowland' into a yahoo search engine I should be item # 20, called an 'open letter' which tells my story.

No the current system doesn't work.
The courts have usurped legislatures.
The Courts ignore the Constitution.
Politicans are owned by special interest groups.
The citizens have been reduced to "cash cow status."
It is impossible for basic services to function due to the priorities of the elites. How long does your comute take each day? Money is taken from us for new roads etc, but they never get built.
The taxation system is a farce that employees legions of lobbyists, lawyers and accountants to protect special interests.
Our legislators are insulated from the public.
My solution:
Eliminate all Federal courts not required by the Constitution.
Institute a straight 10% flat tax on each individual's income that exceeds $35,000 annually, no deductions. No tax on dividends, profits from the sale of property.
No property tax on individual residences not exceeding 4,000 square feet or a market value of $1 million.
Eliminate the Congress and replace it with a lottery. Yes thats right a lottery. Select one citizen from each Congressional district to serve for 2 years. No repeats. How can it be worse than what we have now?
Amend the Constitution so that any taxes, duties, fees, etc must be genral and not item specific (no sin taxes) and insure that any proposed increase must be submitted to the public to approval.
Return to the orginal intent of the Constitution and allow States complete control over their own affairs.
Abolish foreign aid, Depts of Education, Health, and Energy.
Thought-experiment proposed by a friend of mine: Suppose the Founding Fathers get magically resurrected and see the U.S. as it now exists. Bracket out the the shock of technical advancement.
Do they complain about the current government, like the posters above? Do they complain about the current culture, and its trends toward decadence (by late-18C standards, anyway)? Maybe a little. But their overwhelming evaluation is surely going to be "So: more than two centuries, still a Republic, only one Civil War -- and incidentally the most powerful country on the planet. Gentlemen, a toast to a successful experiment."
Compare the U.S. to your preferred ideals and it will come up short (or you need to revise your ideals, frankly). Compare it to reality, to other countries that actually do exist or have existed... and it comes out rather well in the comparison. Doesn't it?

Geez, I didn't realize how bad things were in this country. Thankfully here you come to point out exactly how to fix them. I can't believe no one is taking your ideas seriously...oh wait, no I understand; it's because those ideas are sheer lunacy!! Yes, ours is a horrible system...until you compare it to every other country in the world. Flat tax? Now you're just taking crazy.
Yes.

Kat:
My congressman is all right. It's your congressman who's a pork-peddling bastard.
Erosion of freedom through creeping legalism will make our descendants serfs if we don't find a way to combat it.
Anyone can find pork in their neighborhood. Chances are you drive on it.
Yours,
Wince
Ara:
Isn't your congressman a Republican?
I believe the current system is bullshit.
