Bustamante, who personifies the Peter principle better than anyone, is sinking like a rock. It sure would be funny if McClintock came in second.

As I mention in my post over at WatchBlog, I think Davis knew these numbers from his internal polling. Why else would he have challenged Arnold to a one-on-one debate? It seemed a desperate move at the time and peraps it was time to get desperate.

I agree with Arnold on reducing taxation, getting rid of various "services" performed at taxpayers' expense, supporting abortion rights, setting up hydrogen refill facilities at vehicle service stations along California roads, and numerous other issues. I disagree with his stance against complete citizen gun rights in California.

In essence, I think Davis will be flushed down the political toilet bowl, and Bustamente along with him, and that Arnold will be California's new governor next week even if McClintock continues to play it stupid and remain in the race. And all this makes me happy. (And no, it has nothing to do with the fact that we both share the same given name.)

In most other Republican state parties, if anyone tried pulling the same stunt that McClintock has been doing in California -- acting as spoiler against another Republican leading him by far in the polls -- he or she would be politically dead meat if this continued all the way to the election. Maybe it will be true in California as well unless finally quits during the next few days. As a mostly hardline rightwinger, I like most of his ideology, but he has acted like an asshole ever since Arnold became the obvious leading Republican vote-getter in this campaign.

The second that McClintock drops out the Davis-Mulholland sleaze machine goes nuclear on Arnold. McClintock is continuing to raise his name recognition among Californians. A Saturday pullout (after Mulholland unloads) would show McClintock to be a team player and set him up nicely for a Senate run against Boxer. McClintock will make an excellent Senator but he is not showing any sign of the executive talent necessary to be governor.

As for Arnold, himself, if McClintock is out, he could very well score an absolute majority of the vote, and it might be a fairly high turnout election, lending him an immediate mantle of legitimacy.

The only majority Arnold needs in this California recall election in one vote more than anybody else gets. That gets him all the mantle of legitimacy he needs under the California constitution. In any case, he will almost certainly get more than 50% of the total vote if McClintock does the right thing, drops his opposition, and helps unite the California Republican party.

If he does the wrong thing, I suspect he will get only lukewarm support when he makes a run against Boxer. What goes around comes around.

I'm google-recalling that back in late July, Bob Mulholland, political director of the Democratic Party of California (DPC) was crowing that he knew Republicans who were worrying about losing the recall election. I am sure Mr Mulholland is dreaming about a totally differing set of realities this week.

With just seven days to go, minus late nights, siesta time and most of the coming weekend, there isn't much time to spin shit favorable to his sad-faced democrat governor. Besides, the inhouse polls on both sides are starting to tell the professionals more or less the same thing that CNN-USA Today's weekend blockbuster did:

-- Davis is roadkill, so is Bustamante,

-- the Republicans are solid behind Arnold,

-- the numbers get worse for Davis-Mulholland-Bustamante the more people who choose to vote next week,

-- and it probably doesn't matter worth a damn if McClintock pulls out or not but that the liklihood of this grows with each passing day of Republican unanimity in regard to this campaign.

I'm sure it's also resume time in Democrat City. Mr Mulholland is probably thinking ahead to the inevitable time when he too is bounced from his job. Big time losers usually don't get to hang around very long, either as major league sports team coaches and managers, or key operatives in the big leagues of politics.

(I'm also sure he'll find similar but greatly downscaled action in some much smaller state where the greatly reduced salary will be enough to support him, and where the colossal political disaster that he, sadface and fatface presided over in California will not bring down the entire party power structure in just a few months.)

Davis/Mulholland are frozen in the headlights. If they don't sling sleaze then McClintock runs out of ad money on Thursday - no withdrawal - just no drive. It's a little defficult to understand from WI but the groundswell for Arnold Schwartzenegger feels good (for a Rep). I havn't felt it like this since 66 or 70 - the elections that changed California for the better. We'll see.

Shit, if Arnold wins and actually follows through, I might move back to CA some day!
