Creating Life?

Tony S. has details on the most amazing scientific story I've heard in a long, long time: the apparent creation of a primitive form of life in a lab. Well, sort of. It's really quite amazing anyway.

I once read a sci-fi story about a boy who lived on Mercury (yeah, I know) and there were creatures there composed entirely of electricity. You could kill them by shorting them out to ground.

Sounds kind of similar...
