Johnny Depp, Innocent?

Man, I sure hope this is true. I'm sure ready to give him the benefit of the doubt.

* Update 1:11 pm * James Joyner thinks both Connie du Toit and I should give it a rest either way. Perhaps so.

You sure hope this is true? Why does anyone even care what Johnny Depp says? Who the f--- is he?

Posted by mg on September 07, 2003 at 8:20 AM

What, if he dislikes America that means you can't watch his movies or something?

Posted by cub4bear on September 07, 2003 at 11:05 AM

I like Johnny Depp, and I don't understand the visceral loathing some people have always had for him. I think he's a terribly talented actor.

I'm also just tired of the idiocy in Hollywood, and would like to think that some people there have common sense and are something other than the lock-step, paint-by-numbers leftists that so much of Hollywood falls into.

So I'd be relieved if Depp's not an idiot, and has simply been mischaracterized unfairly. Because I recognize that this can happen, too.

Posted by Dean Esmay on September 07, 2003 at 12:33 PM

Yes, Depp might be an idiot but at least HE did not force a ridiculous tax-cut on our country when we least could afford it. Who's the real idiot?

Tim the Soldier

Posted by Tim on September 07, 2003 at 4:16 PM

Tim, There's a quite easy way to afford tax cuts: Cut spending too. Ever think of that, you silly little man? Evidently this logic seems to escape even Bush.

Johnny Depp is a wild snotty little America-hating actor. However, he was fabulous in his last movie, "Pirates of the Carribbean", so all is forgiven. >:-)

Posted by Mac Swift on September 07, 2003 at 7:51 PM

Based on your last comment it might be you, Tim.

Can you explain to me how a tax cut was forced on our country?

Posted by Adam on September 07, 2003 at 7:54 PM

Acting in the self-interest of one's constituency is not idiotic. And progressive taxation fosters laziness. The top 25% of income-earners in this country pay 67% of the income tax. That is simply crap, and GWB is right to start addressing it. Besides the standard macroeconomic prescription for shortening recessions involves incurring deficits, either through increased spending or decreased taxation. It's a rational response to the economic situation, and appears to be working.

I think it matters when an actor shoots off his/her mouth. I'm certainly planning to blow off the next few Tim Robbins and George Clooney films that come out, though lately that decision can be made based purely on quality vs. politics.

I was delighted when Denver's formerly-heavy-metal-format radio station Alice boycotted Streisand's music in response to one of her idiotic rants.

Posted by Jonathan on September 07, 2003 at 7:54 PM

Y'know, Tim, normally you come across as pretty intelligent; then once in a great while you say something really, really dumb to ruin the impression! :) If nothing else, this one certainly came out of left field! Just how do you manage to segue from Johnny Depp to the Bush tax cut? Oh, well...

Why is the tax cut ridiculous? Recall that it isn't the government's money. It's ours.

We can always afford a tax cut. Best thing in the world. If nothing else, is allows investors and businesses to intelligently invest that money where it will do some good generating goods and services, instead of more bureaucrats.

As Mac Swift points out, one can always cut spending. The Department of Education, for example. Hundreds of billions of dollars over the past couple of decades, and schools scores are as bad as ever. Fire all of 'em and let local school districts make their own decisions. Losing Federal agricultural price supports would be a good idea too. Drop OSHA while you're at it, and gut the spending for the NEA (kick 'em while they're down, I say!).

Adam has a good question: how did Bush "force" the tax cut through? Or, perhaps, it was passed because the representatives in Washington D.C. knew their constituents liked the idea of tax cuts, and (*gasp*) listened? Good Lord forbid. :)

Its not good enough - I would want a more definitive statement by Depp that he was slandered by that Kraut magazine - say, a libel lawsuit.

As it is, I take it that Depp's publicist noted to him how badly his ticket sales might collapse if the hoi-polloi get wind of that interview....

Posted by Mark Noonan on September 08, 2003 at 12:25 AM

I don't care what most actors think. They can think what ever they want--just like the rest of us. However, when they use their celebrity status to further a political cause, then I must respond with the only weapon available: Boycott.

I did not want to boycott Johnny Depp, because I believe he is a fine actor. I wouldn't have a problem with his politics (or anyone else's for that matter) if they kept it to themselves. But when they use the celebrity they've achieved through ticket sales which I contribute to, then I have to care.

This is especially true when someone is living abroad and appears to criticize the U.S.

Posted by Mrs. du Toit on September 08, 2003 at 4:23 PM

Mrs. du Toit,

You seem positively in fear of criticism over your country. Why should acheiving celebritarian status mean the end of any political thoughts. Sorry, I mis-typed. You are allowing free thought, just not speech, in your described rules.

Boycott if you want; voting with economic power is well within your rights. And thank you at least for having an opinion. You see, I feel that "people who keep politics to themselves" are boring. But people who can't tolerate opinions other than their own are boring are, well... We grow and improve through criticism. Your statements make me think you want neither of for your country.

I'm not a US resident, or US born. Distance gives perspective (perhaps a reason Depp lives abroad?). And my criticism would go a lot further than Depp's sound bites have.

But it's encouraging, however, to hear criticism of the US from its own people. It shows a nation that's at least got doubts, that's self-aware. One of the nicest things I can think to say about the US. And you want to stifle that?

Well hey, we've all got our opinions, right?

Posted by James on September 08, 2003 at 7:25 PM

Boycott is not stifling his free speech, it is responding in kind to his speech. He flexes his economic power of celebrity to further his beliefs, Connie flexes her economic power of boycott to further her beliefs.

Free speech does not imply that we must all agree with each other. Think instead: a marketplace of ideas - those ideas that have value will gain prominence.

Posted by Owen on September 09, 2003 at 9:55 AM

Pure and simple, Johnny Depp opened his big mouth because he actually thinks his opinions (since he is a big time movie star) are important. Yes we all have free speech, and you can say what you want. And no, I don't agree with the opinions that I think Johnny Depp was trying to make. But the comments that he made (and with absolutely no facts to support his viewpoint) sounds just like any typical opinion from a typical Hollywood actor who is ignorant of most of the facts (no, not all actors are ignorant). And by doing that, Johnny Depp is actually telling the world that "yes, I am a movie star, I am sexy, I have opinions...and I am stupid". If Johnny Depp was hoping that people who read his comments would be influenced to accept his point of view, then I think he completely missed the bus. The light is on, but Johnny’s not home.

Johnny Depp's opinion means little to me, and he has every right to say what he wants to say, just like you or I can. But you would think that someone with his stature and visibility, before making a comment that will be interpreted as controversial, would gather his thoughts, establish some facts, and then present his opinions to the world at least somewhat intelligently. Not Johnny. He has his political beliefs and I am sure he is looking to promote his political cause. But do you really want someone so visible spewing out such ignorant blabber on your side? Isn't this how the saying goes: "It is better to say nothing and have them think maybe you are an idiot, then to speak up and erase all doubt” In my opinion this definitely applies to Johnny Depp.

And yes, I will continue to watch his movies. I may not agree with Johnny Depp (again, I think I understand the point he was trying to get across) but he is a fine actor, and he has the right to his opinions. That is part of what makes America great, right? But boy, if I could have a dollar for every IGNORANT comment/opinion made by a member of the entertainment industry…

Posted by David on September 22, 2003 at 3:27 PM

Who the fuck cares whether he is a celebrity or not. One can tell just by looking and listening to him speak that he is NOT an idiot. And how do you know that he does not have facts to support what he is saying. Has he been given the chance to elaborate on his thoughts. We're not talking about some selfabsorbed dumbass like Julia Roberts. I think if given the chance he would be able to go on for quite some time concerning his views, and Dave you just sound utterly bitter towards anyone better looking than you who has the chance to speak.

Posted by allice on October 11, 2003 at 1:51 PM

i cant believe it... whats the deal, why shouldn't he stand up and say what he feels. he's not an idiot, anyone who DOESNT stand up for what they feel IS a idiot.
he's a highly talented actor (damm fine to) and has as much right to say what he feels as anyone else..even if it is a little extreame.
Not every person in the US can expect to adore the country, they need to stop being so damm patriotic, i cant see that Johnny has done any harm.

Johnny Depp is NOT dumb. he is very talented and so dedicated to his work. of course i know all actors put effort and talent into their work, like Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. but Johnny Depp has a certain charm, that extra something that makes you wanna go back for more. more of his movies, and that's to see him, people care what stars have to say, generally because they are stars, they shine. and no matter how much we h8 to admit it they are more respected than any normal worker how gets payed minimum wage for doing maximum work. it's unfare but it's the price we pay for entertainment.

Posted by claudia on November 18, 2003 at 3:29 PM

Compared to all the much more scathing criticism America has recieved from other celebrities, this seems down-right reasonable.

Johnny's never been one to take out full page ads and go on national television just to blast the USA, unlike SOME stars. Even if we assume the German report was correct, it seems to be a passing comment instead of a flout for personal attention, which would be out of character from what I've seen of Depp's past behavior.

He is very talented, that I cannot deny, and it will take more than a short, unsubstantiated blurb to ge me upset.

I think johnny depp is very talented.. I am a huge fan of his I have seen almost all of his movies, and I think all of them are obsolutly wonderful! And he is the sexiest man alive! He's a very respected actor. Even though he has it 40 he is still idolized by many teenage fans. Whoever thinks Johnny Depp is dumb in any kind of way they obviously don't see any of his movies, or have any good taste XD
Johnny Depp is a sexy beast!

Whose the idiot? What is the truth? Who is telling the truth? Do you know? Do i know? I dont think we should judge others. Whatever we see or hear on the media...how do we know it is true? How do we know it is false? We dont know. News has become into another Hollywood. If u want to know the facts, find them our in person. Let Johnny Depp say what he wants, think what he wants, do what he wants. He may be correct, or he may be wrong. Why the hell would u boycott his movies for what he says...or thinks? Suppose Depp said Bush is god and the US govt is doing the right thing? Will you then not boycott his movies? Dont boycott the person just because you dont agree with the person. Thats kinda stupid. I mean if he was blowing up ur country, then thats a different story.

Posted by mike on December 26, 2003 at 12:10 AM

first i would like to point out that this was in an interview, and that he did not buy a full page ad or anything conceited like that. he was asked a simple question and gave his opinion, just as any "non-celeb" would. secondly, while he does not deny saying something to the effect of what was published, he does say that his comments were twisted and taken somewhat out of context. imagine if he really said the same things, but directly targetting bush instead of america as a whole. things would be a lot different, and thats not exactly an unlikely scenario, judging by the quality of our american media lately! thirdly, johnny doesnt care what you think, and if he made a public apology, chances are he means it! also, if you could raise your kids in LA or in the french countryside where do you think you would choose?!?! lastly, why do you even care!

Posted by anon on December 31, 2003 at 2:57 PM

I worship Johnny and everything he does. So what if he offends americans. ALl we can do is shrug it off and show we don't care.
