Happy Birthday, Ray Bradbury
Many others linked this earlier this week, but I wanted to link it too. Ray Bradbury's birthday was this week, and in its honor it's hard to think of a better tribute than reading, and thinking about, this essay entitled There's More Than One Way to Burn a Book that he wrote some years ago.
You're welcome for the link... {wry grin}
I first discovered Ray Bradbury in Mr. Frank's eighth-grade English class, when we read Fahrenheit 451-- a book which I've reread (along with many other of Bradbury's books) I don't know how many times since.
On a lighter note, some years back I sighted a car which had a vanity license plate:
JUDY 451
I thought to myself, "Ah yes, JUDY 451: the temperature at which punch bowls catch fire and burn..."
Have you ever noticed how odd Punch & Judy shows are?
With minor variations, the story is always the same, and has been for centuries--through a completely oral tradition.
Have you read the graphic novel Mr. Punch by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean? It riffs on the odd little Punch & Judy traditions, and has a lot of stuff going on "between the lines" if you look carefully that taps into the P & J subtext.
