I Think That, In His Heart, He Really Liked It
Of "Gigli," Ben Kepple sez:
I hated Ben Affleck’s performance in Gigli. I hated Jennifer Lopez’s performance in it. I hated the soundtrack. I hated the work of Martin Brest, the director and screenwriter responsible for this violence against the cinematic arts. I hated the studio which gave Brest $54 million to make this putrescent film. I hated the unknown party within that studio who greenlighted this miserable production because he or she thought it would be great to give Bennifer a vehicle as they cavorted into autumn. Speaking of autumn, let me assure you that even though they have nothing to do with Gigli, I even plan to hate this studio’s upcoming releases for the fall season. That’s how much I hated this movie.I'm thinking that, in his heart, he really liked it
(Go read the rest of his hilarious review here. Although, be forewarened: he thinks The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is the best Western ever made. Oh Ben, Ben, Ben--I hardly knew ye!)
Well, it might not have been the best Western, but its in the top ten...
Yeah, GBE was pretty good.
The Duke in "Big Jake" is more my speed, though.
1. "Bennifer" did not exist when Gigli was made. At the time, Lopez was freshly married to her most recent hubby, and Affleck was in a fairly heavy relationship with some girl so famous I can't remember her name now.
2. The movie is not, and was never intended to be, a romantic comedy. It's just a "B" crime film.
3. Granted that it is not a very good movie, the real problem is that it is being marketed as precisely what it is not, a romantic comedy, starring an attractive couple between whom sparks are flying, and, worst of all, an "A" film.
If Affleck and Lopez were not an item, and if the movie were being marketed for what it really is, I suspect a lot of people would find it more watchable. (Not necessarily GOOD, mind you. :)
When I first head there would be a movie starring both Ben Affleck and J. Ho, I knew it would be one of the worst movies to ever taint the box office.
I warned, begged and pleaded with people not to see the flick.
I tried. I really did. :-)
Oddly enough, Rodger Ebert had some rather nice things to say about the movie.
Bits and pieces; certain scenes; but still nice. :)
